Final Shoot For 2006

Retiring Range Captain, Steve Jaeger, combined with the always sadistic Ben Ireland to hang out what was one mean range on Sunday.
A combination of groug 1,2 & 3 only, ABA tagets were used, this meant the occasional 35mtr rabbit, 48mtr group 3 (or 2) deer, a few 20mtr rabbits, you get the picture, all laid out on the Outback Range just to make it a little more difficult. There were no record scores but everyone had a "great" time.

Later that night the club held it's annual AGM and presentation night, but that's another story (pictorial).

3 Arrow Round

Thirty brave archers hit the boundry range for a three arrow all count round this Sunday, seering temperatures fixed any ambition to beat club or personal records with a number of archers failing to complete the round altogether. Temperatures hit 38 in the shade by the end of the shoot. Wade Hudson was the standout on the day shooting a barebow score most sighted shooters are happy shooting.

3 Arrow Round Sunday 12th Nov 2006

Twenty six keen archers took to the range to test their skills against the flies, heat and wind as much as the targets on Sunday. Ben Ireland, dispite rumours he had "strained a muscle" on his honey moon last week shot well closing in on the club record in the last few targets before a dissapointing shot put the record out of reach.
Shane Thompson elected to shoot cub open for a change, putting his Olympic Recurve down for a day, Shane was in blistering form smashing the old club record, set on IFAA targets, by more than just a few measly points.
NVA would also like to welcome the few newcomers to the club and hope they continue to make the treck to club shoots in the future.

The round was a simple three arrow all count, 20 - 15 - 10 (Kill, Wound, Hit) and ABA tagets.

3 Arrow All Count On IFAA Hunter Faces

Steve Jaeger kept the field guessing when he layed out IFAA Hunter target faces on the ABA Boundry Range this weekend. The target configuration is being accepted by the local archery as a way of encouraging all shooters to compete in unmarked distance shooting. The Hunter faces have a much larger "C" zone than a traditional ABA aninmal face thus archers new to the sport have a larger opportunity to score whilst the actual "A" zone on a IFAA Hunter target is somewhat smaller than and ABA Animal target making it just that little bit more challenging for the more experienced archer. Scoring was kept simple with the 20 - 15 - 10 rule applying for an "A", "B" and "C" respectively.

Some good scores were handed in with the following member beating the club records set in their division.
Sebastian Donovan, Shane Thompson, Meg Jaeger, Katie Patrick, Emily Jaeger, Karen Hudson, and Jodi Dolbel.

Ben Ireland shot consitently to take out the Mens Open.
The club would like wish Ben and Cassie all the best for their wedding next weekend.

Steve Jaeger On Top Of The World

Gunnedah Archer, Steve Jaeger has just returned from Hungary with a coveted World Title after competing in the International Field Archery Association 3D World Championships. The 3D World Championships which attracted a field of over five hundred archers were held in Sopron, Hungary. Jaeger, competing in the Freestyle Limited division won his first ever World Championship after four days of competition with Hungarian, Armand Herczog in second place and Ian Dean from England in third. Jaeger set up his win with a strong showing on the very first and second days. The Hungarian competitor and Jaeger returned the same score for the third round but with a good lead Jaeger was still in control. The fourth round turned into a tense affair with Jaeger not shooting as well as he struggled with equipment problems but showing plenty of mental toughness Jaeger covered his opponent all the way to claim the gold medal in a magnificent performance.
The quality of this win can not be underestimated with Jaeger on a limited travel schedule arriving in Venice, then travelling to Budapest with only two full days to overcome jet lag and acclimatise to the conditions before the tournament. The 300km trip from Budapest to Sopron was a memorable one with Jaeger travelling with his hosts in a Lamborghini sports car. The venue for the event was a Horse Sports complex with the range designers making excellent use of the surrounding Birch and Pine forest with a combination of steep uphill shots, targets placed in very dark areas of the forest and shots placed out in lush open meadows making shooting very difficult. To add to the challenge Jaeger had to quickly adapt to 3D targets he had never shot before and reacquaint himself with the IFAA rules of shoot which are different to those used in Australia. The language barrier was another challenge with Jaeger the only Australian at the event, fortunately all announcements for the tournament were delivered in three languages, Hungarian, German and English making things a little easier. The event was blessed with great weather over the four days with maximum temperatures of 24 degrees, the only blemish was an early morning fog on the last day of competition.
Hosts, Csaba Szamosvolgyi and Ference Csaszar showed plenty of local hospitality to Jaeger renewing a friendship which was established when they competed at the 2004 Australian Championships in Charleville. ‘Aussie Steve’ made a lasting impression in Sopron both on the ranges and the after shoot social activities. Winning the World 3D title has capped off an extraordinary year for Jaeger in which he won three Australian titles. Jaeger was also selected in the seven man Australian team to contest the World Field Archery Championships held in Hervey Bay in June in which he finished fourth in the individual event and won a silver medal in the teams event.

Getting to and from the event in Steve's hosts meager transport was no problem.

The practice butts, competitors had their choice of 3D target, butts or 3D pop up's.

There is always one at a shoot that needs a second look.

Steve taking aim on a beaver.

Yes Steve, we know you shoot with a feminine pink fletch.

Regardless of the colour of his flights Steve cleaned up the Freestyle Limited division by a considerable margin to take the honors and a world title.

As the only Aussie competitor and divisional winner things could only digress quickly.

Steve's host and overall winner.

3 Arrow Shoot Closes The Competition Year

The 2005 - 06 scoring year closed out on the 24th of September under a perfect day, until the wind started. Although the sheltered range offered some protection if you really had to you could blame the breeze occasionally.
The Boundary Range hosted a three arrow all count on ABA targets, scoring was 20 - 15 - 10 for a Kill, Wound, Hit respectively.

Ben Ireland shot and outstanding round dropping only 40 points for the day over 60 arrows, Sebastian Donovan also shot well to set another cub open record.
Wade Hudson continues to harass the Adult Compound ranks with his recent arrival, shooting a convincing win for the barebow division.

Unmarked IFAA Hunter at ABA distances

The club round was a new challenge for all this weekend with the rangemaster electing for a change to the normal, a combination of IFAA Hunter targets on the Outback ABA range.

Even with a smaller kill zone than the applicable ABA targets some impressive scores were handed in with eight new club records being set on the day.

The most outstanding of these records was that of Wade Hudson, up until the shoot Wade had been competing from the green pegs as a junior but decided to step up to the senior peg today to see what it was like. Grouped with Ken Thompson, no slouch in the barebow ranks, Wade embarked on giving Ken a touch up on the way to setting a new club record in senior compound barebow. Not to be outdone by their son Karen and Darryl Hudson also shot impecably to set club records in their respective grades.

Meg Jaeger came out with all cylinders firing, smashing her previous PB and setting a new record for her division also.

Jodi Dolbel also continued her recent good form to post a new record in women freestyle.

It was good to see some of the Tamworth club make it over, young gun Michael Sherwood enjoyed the day and smashed a NVA club record in Cub Recurve by 260 points.

Scoring was simply 20 - 15 - 10.

Branch Championships

Namoi Valley Archers hosted a very successful Boral Country-Northern NSW Branch ABA Championships on the weekend with over 100 archers from Port Macquarie, Maitland, Taree, Gloucester, Kempsey, the Central Coast, Glen Innes and Tamworth taking to the ranges for the two day tournament. Branch Controller, Jeff Jennings, was ecstatic with the attendance and praised the local club for their ability to run top class events. Jennings rated the courses used over the weekend as among the best he has competed on and also welcomed the long term support of field archery by the club’s major sponsor Boral Country-Concrete and Quarries.
The ABA National event involves archers shooting four rounds of twenty animal targets set in natural bush settings at unknown distances. Each day of competition involved two rounds, the three arrow round with the archer’s first scoring arrow counting and the high pressure one arrow round with archers having just one shot per target.
Namoi Valley Archer’s Ben Ireland, a two time Australian Freestyle Unlimited Champion, won a very high quality contest in the Freestyle Unlimited division winning the title by just six points from Port Macquarie’s Eddie Clebsch with another local, Sam Bates finishing just behind Clebsch to take third place. Clebsch threw everything at Ireland over the closing stages but couldn’t bridge the gap in a contest where the difference between winning and losing came down to just a few millimetres.

Jodi Dolbel continued her stellar 2006 winning the Womens Freestyle Unlimited crown with a very dominant performance underling her outstanding potential.

In the barebow Compound ranks Ken Thompson stormed home over the last two rounds to win the A grade title with an outstanding performance. The hard working Thompson has been building to this performance all year and was ecstatic with the win. Karen Hudson shot particularly well to take home the Womens D grade Compound title and based on this performance will be moving up the grades in the very near future. The Bowhunter Unlimited division also provided plenty of action with Dubbo’s Charlie Howard holding off a very determined challenge from local, Stuart Dolbel with Gloucester based, Jeff Jennings in third place. This was Dolbel’s first competitive outing in this division and on this performance he looks set to be a major force in future competitions.
The club’s outstanding junior contingent dominated the tournament winning a swag of medals with Wade Hudson turning in another brilliant performance to win the Branch Junior Compound Advanced title showing the class that took him the 2006 Australian title. The strength of the local club was underlined with club members taking home 6 out of 12 overall trophies with Ben Ireland and Jodi Dolbel (Adult Sighted), Ken Thompson (Adult Barebow), Wade Hudson (Junior Barebow) and Sebastian Donovan and Meg Jaeger (Cub Sighted) all finishing as overall champions.

3 Arrow All Count

It was a perfect winters day at the Wondobah range last Sunday, all up forty one archers took to the range, the last chance for many to practice before the club hosts the two day Branch ABA Championships on the 12th and 13th, next weekend.

ABA tagets were placed on the always difficult Outback range and with a few minnor changes to peg placement, it kept everyone on their toes.

Katie Patrick was the only archer to complete the twenty targets with the rights to boast a new club record for her divison.

Cassie Taylor and Shelly Abra also shot well narrowly missing the record scores in their grades by 15 and 10 points respectively.

Anyone who can help with the canteen or setting up of the range during the week should contact John Clark to help.
Canteen facilities will be available from Friday night through until Sunday lunch for those camping at the range. Hot showers (bag) will be available from Friday night also.

Perfect Day For An ABA

Forty local archers took to the boundry range for a bit of ABA practice leading up to the club two day branch championships shoot to be held on the 12th and 13th August. ABA teaches the archer to estimate distances closely as the life size targets are placed at unknown distances around a 20 target bush range. Scoring is by order of numbered arrow, 1,2,3, the first arrow to hit a score zone is scored. A one arrow kill being the highest scoring arrow at 20 points making the round out of a possible 400. Each of the three score zones is worth two points less per zone as is each additional arrow need to score.

Zone / Arrow 1 2 3
Kill 20 18 16
Wound 14 12 10
Hit 8 6 4

Two club records were broken in the days rounds, Jodi Dolbel continued her recent good form to break womens open and Meg Jeager shot an outstanding round to smash the cub record in her division.

3 Arrow All Count

A small field of 29 archers took to the "Outback" range to test their distance judging skills. The frost hadn't long thawed before the shoot but it wouldn't of stood a chance with Josh Dolbel scorching through the round smashing his previous personal best score by 45 points and breaking the ellusive 1100 barrier for the first time. The 3 arrow club round consist of 20 ABA targets set at unmarked distances between 7 and 48 metres. Three arrows are shot and all are scored depending on where they hit, 20 = kill zone, 15 = wound zone and ten points for a hit zone. Sebastian Donovan was another of the younger archers on fire, beating his previous best and setting a new club record for the Cub Boy Bowhunter Ltd division.

The branch 3D championships are on at Moonterra this coming weekend, pre nominate to Vera Coote on scorennswaba@hotmail.com

Next club shoot will be on the 23rd of July.

3D Shoot

Namoi Valley Archers had a great day of 3D last Sunday, 34 archers took to the 14 target 3D range to shoot a modified round. The first round was a two arrow round scoring 20 for a kill, 15 for a wound and 10 points for a hit. The second round was a one arrow round with the same scoring. It was a bit of a challenge for those archers in the club who have been concentrating on IFAA lately as 3D is not marked distance but it was still great fun. No records were broken on the day but good scores were posted in every division, the range is quiet challenging as the layout does offer a lot of deceptive shots through dead ground.

WFAC Pics

Wide Bay Archers done an exceptional job to organise such a large event, canteen, ranges, practice butts and bar was all without fault for the entire week, well done Wide Bay Archers.

The practice butts were packed in the mornings, at first light there was always at least 50 archers ready to go, within an hour of shooting the practice range would often have up to 500 archers warming up, even when it rained.

Teams from 15 different nations competed at an individual and a national team level, the uniforms were something to see.

The next WFAC in 2008 will have Namibia as the host. Promises of exceptional hunting trips to coincide with the shoot where easily negotiated.

In Estonia they rarely shoot outdoors due to the cold, we were told that the target are located in a wagon wheel fashion around a club house which they stand in to shoot out into the cold and then quickly run out and score and pull their arrows before running back to the warmth.

As usual there were some craftsman around, mostly in the lowbow division.

Cub Girls had a great time and always finished three hours before the seniors and junior ranks, more time for more important things, like chasing boys no doubt.

The freindship shown between archers of all nationalities was exceptional and many will keep in contact with members of their shoot groups for years to come.

Here is Jodi Dolbel on her way to a gold medal in FSU B grade, Jodi shot exceptionally posting PB's on almost a daily basis.

There are always a few characters to watch out for on the range, these two have a bloke in a fox hat bailed up.

Sam Bates and Ben Ireland were in the thick of it in the most competitve division of FSU, both were happy with their overall performance but saw a side of archery that only a global event can demonstrate.

Wade Hudson was on fire for the WFAC, blazing the field daily on his way to a gold medal and cementing himself as the best barebow archer of his age in the world.

There were many familiar faces on the ranges, some of the badges were old but showed what and where archery has come from in Australia.

The Australian team came second to the US in the Team Of Nations event, local club member Steve Jaeger shot well for the week to finish forth and will find his time on the Australian team an invaluable learning experience.

Shane Thompson was exstatic to win the cub FSR division, a WFAC gold medal in front of a big home country audience, it doesn't get much better than that.

Wade accepting his gold medal from the international delegates.

Jodi Dolbel has improved at a rate many archers envy to pick up a gold in FSU B grade, imagine what she'll be like when she actually practices occasionally.

Josh Dolbel also rose to the occasion to shoot well and grab a silver in Junior FSU B grade.

Stuart Dolbel, finished the week a lot stronger than he started, grabbing a bronze in BHL A grade by one point on the last day.

The US team won the Team Of Nations event..........again.

Sniff !!!, Wednesday night..........I'd rather forget it thanks.

Australian Team.

Five Gold At World Field Archery Championships

Hervey Bay was the location for the IFAA World Field Archery Championships hosted by the Wide Bay Archers club between the 12th and 16th of June. Terrential rain on the days leading up to the event made for wet conditions, turning the usually flat terrain into what can only be termed a swamp in some places. After five day’s shooting for up to seven hours per day and over six hundred competitors, from 15 different nations, shooting in these conditions the ranges held up remarkably well.

Namoi Valley Archers sent a fifteen member team to what was and will probably be the largest event these archers may ever get the opportunity to compete in. The WFAC is the pinnacle event in field archery and is the closest thing this style of archery has to an Olympic comparison. After many months of training and at great individual expense the event had arrived and the representatives done Namoi Valley Archers club proud.

Wade Hudson smashed the competition and set a new world record to take out the gold in Junior Boys Bowhunter Compound Class A, Wade stamped his superiority in this division from the first day and never looked like being threatened winning by 45 points after the five days, Wades first World gold medal will hang proudly next to his Australian title claimed in April this year.

Jodi Dolbel shot superbly to take out the gold in Womens Freestyle Unlimited Class B, Jodi has only been shooting competitively for just over a year now and has improved at a rate many archers envy, Jodi shot personal best scores on almost every day and blitzed the field with a huge personal best on the last day to cement the win and undoubtedly put herself in place for a well deserved move into the A Class ranks in future shoots.

Jamie Thompson shot well to take out gold in the Junior Boys Bowhunter Limited Class C group narrowly beating fellow Australian Ben Hanrahan by two points in a tough competition.

Not to be outdone by the Junior and Senior shooters the cubs also performed well in this global event, Shane Thompson shot outstandingly shooting a new world record to take out gold in Cub Boys Freestyle Limited Recurve. Emelia Dolbel also shot well to take out gold in Cub Girl Freestyle Limited Compound. The experience will make these two archers a force to be reckoned with as they progress into the Junior ranks in the near future.

Joshua Dolbel shot above his grade to take silver in Junior Boys Freestyle Unlimited Class B, Josh found his feet in the muddy conditions to shoot a number of personal best scores but just fell short of securing the gold, Josh is another archer that will find himself moved into class A after this sterling performance.

In Bowhunter Limited Class A Stuart Dolbel finished well with a bronze, after being ranked sixth on the third day Stuart strung two strong days together and on the last day beat the current Australian champion in the division by one point to take the third place on the world podium, a sweet victory after a narrow loss to the fourth place archer at the National titles earlier this year.

Steve Jaeger shot well but was against the best Freestyle Limited shooters in the world and after shooting a number of PB’s came in at number four, a huge effort in such a quality field. Cassie Neuendorf, Darryl Hudson & Rob Porter all competed well to take out fourth place in their respective divisions an effort well worth a mention. Other rankings included Ken Thompson eleventh, Sam Bates thirty second, Ben Ireland thirty fifth and Dave Buckingham forty fifth.

A full list of the results can be seen on the Australian Bowhunter Association IFAA WFAC website at http://www.bowhunters.org.au/wfac/results.htm

Last Practice Before World Titles

Thirty six archery enjoyed a perfect mornings practice of IFAA Animal this Sunday. A spectacular winters day saw some good scores handed in with both Sam Bates and Steve Jaeger unlucky to miss out on perfects by two points.
Ben Ireland also shot well with his new Trycon but was robbed of a perfect as a result of a less than forgiving cam.
Jodi Dolbel and Karen Hudson both lifted the benchmark for the ladies, shooting new club records in their respective divisions.
Phillip Porter was also on fire smashing the old club record in the process of winning convincingly in the barebow ranks.

Next weekend see's a large number of the club members making the treck to Hervey Bay to compete in the World Field Archery Championships for IFAA, the pinicle event of field archery, this is as good as it gets. The club is hopefull of bringing home a few medals but the competition at this level will test all competitors and to finish in the top 5 at this level of competition is something to be proud of, keep an eye out for updates on this website as the event unfolds between the 12th and 16th of June.

IFAA State Titles

NSW State 2006 IFAA Namoi Valley Archers

Namoi Valley Archers hosted the State IFAA Titles last weekend at the Wondobah Range. Eighty four archers competed, posting both good and bad scores.

Jodi Dolbel was the standout archer of the weekend posting two personal best scores in a row to take out the Women Freestyle division, Jodi now carries National and State titles for this style of archery and if she carrries her recent form to the world titles in a couple of weeks it should place her in a good position for global recognition.

Sam Bates shot well and narrowly missed first place in the Mens Freestyle division proving the Apex7 as a dominant bow for target archery. Greg Donovan also shot well to win his division, Greg has improved greatly over the last few months and should make for some stiff competition in the future.

Australian IFAA Team member Steve Jaeger also shot well showing national sellectors they have made the right decision in sellecting him over long time Australian team member Randall Wellings for the up and comming world titles next month.

Wade Hudson shot well to take out the Junior Bowhunter division and must be a favorite for this division at the worlds.

Nominations for the World Titles have been estimated at 560+ competitors with entries from Canada, USA, New Zealand and Europe, ensuring that the best of the best will be there to compete in this prestigious event.

3 Arrow Round

Forty eight archery took to the range for a 3 arrow all count club round last weekend, a good role up of juniors and cubs saw 29 kids on the range further testement to the enjoyment kids and adults alike get from this growing sport. The three arrow round is a twenty ABA target round with each arrow scoring, 20 - Kill, 15 - wound and 10 points for a hit, making the round worth up to 1200 points. Ben Ireland was in blistering form after he recent success at the Nationals, Ben had only scored three wounds up until target 13 all his other arrows had been perfectly placed in the kill zone, by the end of the round Ben had set a new club record and only placed 6 arrows in the wound out of 60. Cassie Neuendorf, Ben's soon to be wife, was also on fire, must be that Moonbi water, after some tinkering with her setup through the week Cassie smashed the old club record and the competition posting a new personal best in the process.

Gunnedah Successful at National Titles

The 2006 Australian Field Archery Championships, held in Orange, have been dominated by the twenty three member team from Namoi Valley Archers. The Gunnedah club sent the largest ever contingent to represent the club at a National titles and their amazing performance in winning 15 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals across the three disciplines was the talk of the eight day event. Steve Jaeger proved beyond doubt he is the best Freestyle Limited archer in Australia winning his fourth consecutive ABA title, his second consecutive 3D title and dethroning former champion Randall Wellings to win his first IFAA Australian title in a stunning performance. The husband and wife team of Stuart and Jodi Dolbel have yet to settle who has bragging rights in the Dolbel household after they both finished with two gold and one silver medals. Bowhunter Limited archer, Stuart Dolbel, proved what a talented competitor he is winning gold in the 3D and ABA events and finishing a very narrow second in the IFAA event in his best ever showing at an Australian Titles. Jodi Dolbel put it all together when it mattered most to win her first Australian medals. Jodi blitzed the field in the 3D event, grabbed a silver in the ABA event and then saved her best performance for the IFAA event to grab a very hard fought gold medal. Ben Ireland realized his dream of defending his Australian ABA Freestyle Unlimited title with a brilliant performance. Ireland had watched his chances evaporate in the 3D event after an uncharacteristically slow start but made every arrow count in the ABA event to achieve the historically difficult feat of defending his title in a division where one poor shot usually ruins your chances. Outstanding junior, Wade Hudson, stamped himself as the best unmarked barebow archer at the Australian Titles winning the Advanced division in both 3D and ABA in very impressive fashion. Hudson handled the pressure of the big occasion with real maturity shooting brilliantly in every round to leave his opposition no chance as he claimed two Australian titles at his first attempt.

Australian 3D Championships.
The 3D event consists of four twenty target rounds held over four days with competitors shooting at life size foam targets set at unknown distances. Namoi Valley Archers 20 competitors won a total of 7 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals in this event with the previously mentioned Steve Jaeger, Stuart Dolbel, Jodi Dolbel and Wade Hudson all winning their respective divisions. Cameron Hill burst onto the national stage shaking off some indifferent from to win his first Australian title with a great performance across the four days in the Junior Bowhunter Limited division. The confidence gained from this win will no doubt help Hill in future events and was wonderful result for the quietly spoken young archer. Jamie Thompson also shot well to grab a bronze medal in the same division. A clean sweep of medals at a National event by one club is a fairly rare event but when the competitors are all sisters the feat becomes even more impressive. Katie, Jackelyn and Sammy Patrick achieved this rare honour when they swept all before them in the Cub Recurve D grade division in a fantastic result. Peter Stubbs shot personal best scores on his way to a bronze medal in Masters Recurve. Stubbs thought he was there to just make up the numbers but turned on a great performance to grab third place in the top grade. Michael Patrick showed his liking for the 3D targets scoring a very well deserved silver in C grade Recurve. Ken Thompson flew the flag in the barebow Compound ranks winning a bronze medal in a very hard fought A grade event with a polished performance. Christopher Patrick scored the silver in Cub Compound D grade and Shane Thompson won a gold medal in Cub Freestyle Limited with a typically determined performance while juniors, Keegan Patrick, D grade compound and Josh Dolbel, Freestyle Unlimited finished with well deserved silver medals.

Australian ABA Championships.
The ABA event consists of four rounds of twenty targets held over two days with competitors shooting at hand drawn animal targets set at unknown distances. All 23 competitors from Namoi Valley Archers contested this event winning 6 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals with the previously mentioned Steve Jaeger, Stuart Dolbel, Ben Ireland, Wade Hudson all winning gold with Jodi Dolbel taking silver in their respective divisions. The Patrick sisters were back in action for this event in Recurve D grade with Katie taking the gold, Jackelyn the silver while the youngest Sammy, just missed a medal finishing fourth in another great performance from the trio. Another of the club’s young brigade, Meg Jaeger, showed plenty of courage to finish with a very cherished silver medal in Cub Compound D grade. The outstanding performance for the youngsters continued with Shane Thompson making it back to back gold medals winning Cub Freestyle Recurve putting together four good rounds. Christopher Patrick added to the medal haul with a gutsy performance to take silver in Cub Compound D grade. Ken Thompson continued his fine form in this event taking the bronze in Compound A grade in a division widely considered one of the hardest fought in the barebow ranks. Recurve exponents Darrell Hudson and Michael Patrick renewed their friendly rivalry in Barebow Recurve C grade with Hudson finishing with the silver and Patrick grabbing the bronze. Ray Sweeney, Freestyle Limited and Josh Dolbel, Junior Freestyle Unlimited added hard won silvers to their trophy cabinets. Cameron Hill continued his fine tournament to take silver in Junior Bowhunter Limited with Jamie Thompson taking his second bronze of the weekend in the same division. Keegan Patrick rounded out his tournament with a silver medal in Junior Compound D grade.

Australian IFAA Championships
The IFAA event is vastly different from the ABA and 3D event with round paper targets set at known distances with competitors required to shoot four arrows at each of the 28 targets. In the ABA and 3D events the minimum numbers of arrows to complete the event is 80 but in the IFAA event the minimum number of arrows is a very demanding 476 with five rounds shot over four days. Namoi Valley Archers was represented by 8 competitors in this event finishing with 2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Steve Jaeger shot personal bests in virtually every round of the IFAA event leaving Randall Wellings, a multiple Australian representative who has made this division his own over the last few years, stunned as he watched Jaeger waltz away with the gold medal in Freestyle Limited. Ray Sweeney, also a former holder of this title also shot well to take third place. Jaeger was thrilled with the win and can’t wait to renew rivalries at the World IFAA Championships in June. Jodi Dolbel showed what a fine archer she is winning her first Australian title in Freestyle Unlimited with an outstanding performance over the five rounds and this confidence boosting win was well deserved. Stuart Dolbel had fought his way to the lead in Bowhunter Limited with just fourteen targets to go in the IFAA event but a simple mistake on target 16 cost him the title. Dolbel will have learnt a lot from this battle which will stand him on good stead for future events. Ben Ireland showed plenty of fight as he grimly hung onto third place in Freestyle Unlimited finishing with the bronze, his first ever Australian IFAA medal in a great performance from this talented archer. Josh Dolbel finished the championships with his third medal taking the bronze in Junior Freestyle Unlimited underlining his versatility and consistency in all styles of archery.

Knife and Axe
The Knife and Axe throwing events are always a keenly contested and fun filled part of the National championships and this year Steve Jaeger won the silver in the Knife throwing. Jamie Thompson grabbed third place in the Junior Axe event and Shane Thompson won both the Knife and Axe throwing for Cubs.

National Titles Medal Haul

Orange lived up to it's cold reputation turning on a huge frost and -6 temperatures one morning. This effected some gear and fine tuning at the practise butts was nesseccary. I also overheard one visitor from the Northern Territory state it was the first time he had seen frost, and he didn't go much on it.

Team Gunnedah after the medal presentation on Monday.

Ben Ireland with his first National IFAA medal.

Ben also managed to defend his ABA titles gained at Charleville last year.

Steve Jeager defeated long standing FSL champion Randell Wellings convincingly over the weekend putting Steve in good position to bring a medal home from the World Titles in Hervey Bay this June.

Some archers were more impressed with their scorecard than others. Jodi was that impresed with her PB of 378 that she took a photo of it for her scrapbooks. Lucky for Stuart he came in with 380 that morning leaving his pride along with other things still intact.

Here is Jodi after an outstanding effort at her first National event.

Although equipment problems plauged Jodi in this event it was still good to see she remained competetive enought to bring a medal home.

The ranges were harder than a walk up porky lookout but Jodi put the head down and came out on top after 4 arduous days of solid archery.

After picking up ten points and the lead for the BHL division on the last day by target 14, I managed to wrong pin twice on target 16 thus putting an end to my hopes of a IFAA gold medal in 2006. After a couple of drinks that night I just put it all down to experience, bit like learning to drive by crashing your fathers Merc.

Josh shot well in all three events but found stiff competition in all three disiplines, good training for future events.

The barebow compound style is probably the most hotly contested division at the national ABA / 3D events, to come home with a medal of any description is a big achievement, well done Ken.

Mick Patrick slogged it out with his local rival and others but still managed to stay on the podeum, must have been something to do with the accomodation.

Peter Stubbs was the dark horse, graded into a division though well above his grade but still shone through with some exceptional archery, watch out Darryl and Mick.

Cameron Hill and Jamie Thompson also had success in the JBBHL division, well done and stay away from those release aids and adjustable sights, BHL is where the fun is guys.

Wade Hudson proved beyond a doubt he is one of the best Junior Barebow archers around easily taking out his division at the National level this year.

Branch E, NNSW, also took out the gold in the Branch titles for the second year in a row.

Some had better weeks than others............hey tingle.
