ABA Round Tests The Locals
Forty one archers took to the field to get in some much needed practice in the ABA format before the National titles at Orange this Easter. The ABA style sees the archer shoot two round of twenty targets. Targets are divided into five types depending on their distances, the farthest being 48 metres. In the first round 3 arrows maybe shot at the target but the first arrow to score a kill, wound or hit is only recorded, the value of each of the zones declines by two points and then by another two points per arrow shot, eg First arrow = 20 kill or 18 wound or 16 hit, the second arrow would be 14 or 12 or 10 and so forth. The second round is much tougher with only one arrow shot per target, no second chances.
Wade Hudson put in a smoking performance crushing his previous club record and posting a huge score in the process. Katie Patrick, Emelia Dolbel, Sebastian Donovan and Shane Thompson all broke the club records in their respective divisions after great days shooting.
John Clark pulled the new bow out the bubble wrap and showed everyone where the benchmark needs to be in Mens Open, Steve Jaeger wasn't far off the pace and finished ahead of Ben Ireland and Same Bates who shot pretty average after their good performances at the IFAA shoot last weekend.
Womens Open was also hotley contested with Jodi Dolbel just edging out Cassie Nuendorf after a demoralising second round from Jodi, cubs can be fun.

IFAA Tuggerah Lakes
After a 20 minute drive west of Wyong up picturesque Yarramalong Valley we reached the turnoff.
The practise butts were well used as the first IFAA of the year had plenty of interest and plenty of worry. Here Brian gives a few words of advice, the old pro.
The 80 yard target bought many a good archer unstuck.
The juniors were out in force posting some handy scores over the weekend. Here is Elliot Hayes and Josh Dolbel, enjoying the moutainous terrain.
The first target utilised the practise butt area, a nice 50 yards target to start the day.
The canteen done a roaring trade and had a few native guest as well trying to sponge a free feed of chips and gravy.

Tuggerah Lakes IFAA
A team of nine, including Ray Sweeney, from the Namoi Valley Archers hit the tough Tuggerah Lakes course to compete in the IFAA invitational last weekend, returning home with four gold and three silver medals after a great weekend of archery.
Although only a small field at fifty five competitors it was a quality field with the best archers from the branch taking the opportunity to get some IFAA practice in before the Nationals at Orange this Easter and the World Championships at Hervey Bay come June this year.
One Hunter round was shot on the Saturday and one field round on the Sunday.
Ben Ireland shot consistently over the weekend taking out the top position overall.

3D Round See's Some Great Scores
Sunday saw the first 3D shoot for the season. As per the vote at last years AGM scoring was the same as an ABA round, the only thing is our 3D range is a 14 target range, not a 20 target range as per ABA, no problem, this seemed to suit the large group of archers with two 14 target rounds being shot and buy the end of it everyone seemed happy with the new steup.
The course was challenging enough to see the best archers unable to get a perfect but rewarding enough to keep the bulk of the shooters in the money. John Clark posted a fantastic second round just missing a perfect fourteen targets by two points. Once the scores were recorded and converted from the old 3D scoring Ben Ireland and Sam Bates can both claim new course records at 550 out of a possible 560, well done. Cassie Nuendorf also posted a record in the womens open, obviously taking a liking to the hunting distances used on the range.
Without a target over 40mtrs it's all about placement and target choice, and a small pig at 25mtrs at the bottom of a steep gully with 12mtrs of dead ground makes for some interesting distance estimates, especially when you could hardly see it for the shadows in the morning and then it was almost shiney in the afternoon.
It was a great shoot and judging by the scores one most were happy to shoot.
