Namoi Valley Archers wrapped up a hugely successful 2011 season with the presentation of club medallions for the respective division winners. During the year club members have competed in World, Pacific Region, Australian, State and regional tournaments with great success reinforcing the club’s reputation as one of the powerhouses in Australian field archery. The club hosted the 2011 NSW 3D championships in August receiving high praise from both competitors and State officials for the quality of the ranges used and the smooth running of the tournament. The club heads into 2012 with an unchanged executive of Peter Stubbs - President, Stuart Dolbel – Treasurer and John Clark – Secretary, at the helm and the new year is shaping up as another busy season of field archery in Gunnedah.
The prestigious 2011 Club person of the Year was awarded to Peter Stubbs. This award was a well deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication Peter put in over the entire year in leading the club both on and off the range. The 2011 season was marked by some very close competition with many divisions decided by just a few points. Greg Donovan was the winner of the Mens Open division for 2011 finishing as the overall highest point scorer in the club just edging out Stuart Dolbel after an absorbing year long contest with Gordon White grabbing third place. Wade Hudson capped off a stellar season by finishing as the top Mens Compound archer despite a limited club schedule due to university commitments. Jarrod Stubbs filled second place with veteran, Neville White in third. A delighted Wendi Murrell captured top spot in Womens Compound for the first time by the smallest of margins with Karen Hudson in second and Ann Stubbs in third. Darrell Hudson stamped his class on the Traditional contest finishing the year as number one with Peter Stubbs taking second and Phil Greenwood third. In the Olympic division there was a new number one with Mark Stevenson coming out on top with Ken Thompson in second and Steve Jaeger finishing third. In the Junior ranks the Boys Open contest top spot went to Sebastian Donovan with Zac Hayne in second and Lachlan Boyd in third. The Cub Girls Compound was a family affair with the Murrell sisters filling the top three places. Haylee finished the year as number one with Kaytlyn second and Emylie in third.
The most improved trophy was awarded to Mark Stevenson with Bernie Hayne a popular winner of the Party Animal of the Year trophy for the second successive year. Matt Sinclair was awarded Bowhunter of the Year receiving a hand crafted hunting knife for his efforts. Club stalwart, John Clark, was honoured with life membership of Namoi Valley Archers in recognition of his contribution to the club over many years. Since joining the club in 1989, Clark has held virtually every position in the club at one time or another and is the longest serving continuous member of the club.

Namoi Valley Archers have dominated the Australia wide 2011 Eco Shoot with 16 first, 7 second and 4 third placings.

The Eco Shoot was introduced this year to enable competition between clubs from all over Australia without the need for travel.

To be eligible for the event archers were required to shoot 2 rounds consisting of 40 arrows each round at their home club in August.

Namoi Valley Archers club members embraced the concept with the club entering on mass having the largest participation in the 200 strong entry list.

Among the highlights was the performance of Greg Scott and Nathan Murrell who scored a 1-2 finish in the Bowhunter Unlimited Flight 2 division with Wendi Murrell and Ann Stubbs also finishing 1-2 in the Womens A grade compound event.

The club’s Recurve archers also got in on the act with Darrell Hudson first and Peter Stubbs third in the A grade contest.

Gordon White was thrilled with his second placing in the Freestyle Unlimited Flight 2 division.

Among the juniors, Lachlan Scott, was a standout winning the Bowhunter Unlimited event returning the overall highest score by a junior archer.

Sebastian Donovan also finished number one in the Freestyle Unlimited contest

The last club shoot for 2011 was held on Sunday and keeping with tradition the day provided something different. A team event was debuted and judging by the positive reaction of competitors will be on offer again in 2012. Score Recorder, Stuart Dolbel, worked overtime to give each archer a handicap and this was added to the score shot on Sunday.

After the smoke had cleared from the calculators a final team score was posted and the winners declared among the ten teams competing.

Girl Power won the day with the team of Ann Stubbs, Sharon Boyd and Emylie Murrell victorious.

Second place went to Peter Stubbs, Peter Bush, John Woolaston and Lachlan Boyd with the team of John Clark, Denise Stevenson and Haylee Murrell taking third.

The club will be back in action in 2012 with the shoot calendar now being finalized.

Boundary Range Harder To Handle Than A Dead Possum In A Water Tank......well nearly.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow club event on Sunday with a good field taking on the Boundary range in hot and windy conditions.

Stuart Dolbel was in scintillating form scorching round the course to record an impressive victory in the Sighted division. Greg Scott and john Clark had a close battle for the minor placings with Scott doing just enough to grab second place by the narrowest of margins.

Karen Hudson proved too strong in the Compound contest recording a dominant victory with Ann Stubbs in second and Ken Hill taking third.

The Traditional division was a very close affair with Peter Stubbs shooting consistently to take top spot by just 10 points from Darrell Hudson with John Woolaston in third. This was the first time John Woolaston has shot in several years and he was not far off the pace in his comeback shoot suggesting he will be competing for top honours in the very near future.

Ethan Mansfield confirmed his growing reputation with an impressive performance in winning the Junior Sighted division with Sebastian Donovan in second and Zac Hayne in third.

The final club shoot for the year will be held on December 11.

NNSW 3D Titles: Great Result for NVA

Namoi Valley Archers was represented by a 20 member team at the Northern NSW 3D Championships held at Singleton.

The Singleton club was hosting a 2 day tournament for the first time and competitors praised the testing 3D layout and hospitality of the club. The tournament was conducted over four tough rounds with Namoi Valley Archers winning 7 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals in a powerful display.

Karen Hudson scored a dominant win in the Womens Masters compound event shooting well over the four rounds with clubmate, Wendi Murrell, taking the bronze in a very competitive A grade contest.

Jarrod Stubbs also finished with bronze in the Mens A grade contest.

Darrell Hudson had to work extremely hard to secure the win in A grade Recurve division. Hudson trailed fellow Gunnedah archer, Peter Stubbs, at the conclusion of the first 2 rounds, held on Saturday, by 84 points. Hudson surged during the third round to cut the deficit to just 10 points and then put together a brilliant final round to score a memorable win with Stubbs having to settle for silver.

Bernie Hayne showed great character to finish with the silver in Freestyle Unlimited Flight 2 after easing past Kempsey archer, Glenn Freeman, by just 6 points in a spirited battle for the minor placings.

Lloyd Jauja also shot exceptionally well over the 2 day event to secure the silver medal in Bowhunter Unlimited Flight 1 while Nathan Murrell was thrilled with his silver medal in Flight 2 holding off Ed Hayes from Tuggerah Lakes by a very narrow 4 points.

The club’s young archers performed extremely well with Lachlan Scott shooting with incredible precision on his way to top spot in Junior Bowhunter Unlimited Flight 1 while newcomer Adam Loftus scored a memorable win in Flight 2 with a consistent performance over the 4 rounds.

Zac Hayne finished with silver in Junior Freestyle Unlimited after running into a red hot archer from Singleton in Jake Collins who recorded a perfect score in the final round.

The Murrell girls were in fine form with Haylee winning Cub A grade Compound, Kayltyn grabbing silver in B grade and Emylie winning D grade. Haylee Murrell continues to show great improvement returning the best score by a Cub compound archer by a significant margin.

William Loftus rounded out the medal haul scoring an impressive win in Cub Freestyle Unlimited with a superb performance across the four rounds.

The focus returns to club activities with a 3 arrow round set down for this Sunday.

Delta........with a twist

Namoi Valley Archers held a Delta round On Sunday with a good field taking to the Outback range in perfect weather conditions.

The club trialled a new scoring system on Sunday with archers allowed to shoot 3 arrows at each target with the only the highest scoring arrow counted.

The new scoring system worked well allowing competitors the opportunity to attack the very small bullseye on the Delta targets with the end result some very close finishes in the various divisions.

Tamworth veteran, Neville White scored the victory in the Compound event just doing enough to defeat Karen Hudson who just edged out Wendi Murrell in a very tight contest for the minor placings .

Darrell Hudson led the field home in the Traditional event with Peter Stubbs and Phil Greenwood finishing tied after a very tense battle.

John Clark found the scoring system to his liking to record a very narrow win in the Sighted contest with Gordon White in second and Greg Donovan and Greg Scott deadheating for third.

The close scoring continued in the Junior Sighted event with Zac Hayne and Sebastian Donovan unable to be separated in the battle for top spot with Lachlan Boyd grabbing third.

Due to a change of date for the Branch 3D tournament at Singleton the club 3D shoot set down for November 6^th has been moved to this Sunday, 30th October starting at 9.00am

Eco Shoot

Namoi Valley Archers debuted a new concept at the range on Sunday holding a round of Australian Eco Shoot. This concept involves clubs all over the country holding a round at their home range during August with all scores forwarded to the National score recorder with the highest pointscorers in each division receiving medallions. Greg Scott set a cracking pace in the Sighted division turning in two excellent rounds with Gordon White also shooting well to grab second place from the rapidly improving Nathan Murrell. Karen Hudson was the top pointscorer in the compound division with Wendi Murrell taking second place and Jarrod Stubbs in third. Darrell Hudson was in great form taking the Traditional event by a big margin from Peter Stubbs and Michael Patrick. Lachlan Scott shot superbly to win the Junior Sighted event with Zac Hayne and Sebastian Donovan grabbing the minor placings. Stacey Scott was the pick of the Cub compound archers with Haylee and Kaytlyn Murrell filling the minor placings. The next club shoot will be held this Saturday afternoon with registration at 12.30 pm

Half IFAA Round

Namoi Valley Archers held a 14 target IFAA round on Sunday with the windy conditions keeping scores down. The IFAA round requires competitors to shoot 4 arrows at each target with all distances marked at the shooting peg.

Darrell Hudson turned in the top barebow round of the day with an impressive performance in the Traditional event, with Peter Stubbs in second and Sharon Boyd in third.

Karen Hudson led the field home among the Compound shooters after putting together a tidy round with Wendi Murrell in second and Ann Stubbs taking third.

John Clark did just enough to finish on top in the Sighted contest with a very tight battle for the minor placings with Stuart Dolbel and John Finn finishing in a dead heat.

Brothers, Adam and William Loftus also returned good scores in their respective divisions.

The club has added an extra event to the shoot calendar this Sunday with the 2011 Australian Eco Shoot to be contested. The Eco shoot is a new innovation with clubs all round Australia conducting a shoot at their own venue in August with the results to be sent in to the National score recorder and overall winners decided. The format will see archers shooting 2 x 20 target rounds on the day with 2 scoring arrows at each target.

The shoot set down for Saturday 3^rd of September will proceed as normal.

State 3D Wrap up

Namoi Valley Archers hosted a highly successful NSW State 3D Championships over the weekend attracting a quality field of 109 competitors for the 2 day tournament. Tournament director, Peter Fairhall, lavished praise on the Gunnedah club for the organization of the event rating the ranges the best he had seen for a 3D event in this country.

Course designers, Greg Donovan and Stuart Dolbel provided 2 ranges that required maximum concentration on every shot with meticulous target placement making clever use of the varying terrain. The difficulty of the courses resulted in the last group walking of the range after the second round on Saturday at 4.45 pm in fading light. Shoot organizers were forced to change Sunday’s program to a 2 arrow round due to the slow progress on the range to get the event finished on time.

Local archers performed extremely well with many outstanding performances.

Highlights included Wade Hudson continuing his unbeaten run in major tournaments in 2011 scoring a very hard fought win in the Mens Masters division after a spirited contest with Rob Salter from Maitland. Salter held a narrow 2 point lead after the first round but Hudsonresponded to ease in front after the second round and was too consistent over the closing round to secure the win.

Other Compound winners included Karen Hudson in Womens Masters and Ann Stubbs scoring a great win in Womens A grade shooting a score that would have won the Mens event.

Darrell Hudson finished as the top Recurve archer scoring a fine win in A grade with Michael Patrick winning B grade.

The club showed the incredible depth it has after an amazing performance in the Mens Bowhunter Unlimited event with Stuart Dolbel shooting brilliantly all weekend to finish with the State Title in the top division Flight 1, with club mates Lloyd Jauja and John Finn taking the minor placings.

The club repeated the clean sweep in Flight 2 with Greg Scott shooting superbly to take top spot with youngster James Bush and Nathan Murrell completing the trifecta.

Lachlan Scott and Adam Loftus continued the run in Junior Boys Bowhunter Unlimited taking the gold in Flight 1 and Flight 2 respectively.

The standout performances among the Cub ( under 13) archers came from Haylee Murrell who turned in a stunning display to finish as State Champion in Girls Compound A grade and William Loftus who shot with great precision to win the boys Freestyle Unlimited crown in his first ever tournament.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round 3D event on Sunday with a big field taking to the range with competitors taking the last chance to prepare for the 2011 NSW State 3D Championships to be hosted by the club this weekend.

The day saw showers sweep across the range with competitors taking the conditions in their stride with some excellent scores posted including new club records from Stacey Scott and Haylee Murrell.

Tamworth archer and 3D specialist Brad Smith was in superlative form scoring a brilliant win in the Sighted division shooting with incredible precision on the testing layout. Gordon White was another archer in good form staging a very tense battle with Greg Scott grabbing second place by just 2 points.

Another Tamworth archer, veteran Neville White, scored a good win in the Compound division showing a clean pair of heels to the chasing pack to score a memorable win. Steve Jaeger and Wendi Murrell couldn’t be separated in the race for the minor placings finishing tied after the 40 targets.

Darrell Hudson showed he will be right in the mix for a State title this weekend scoring a fine win in the Traditional contest with Phillip Greenwood taking second with Peter Stubbs in third.

Lachlan Scott finished the day as the top Junior Sighted archer after putting together 2 fine rounds with Sebastian Donovan in second and Stacey Scott shooting well to finish third.

ABA On Outback Range

Namoi valley Archers held a 2 round ABA event on Sunday with a big field taking to the Outback range to compete in perfect weather conditions.

Wade Hudson was once again in superlative form smashing his own club record as he romped away from the field to score a decisive win in the Compound division underlining his status as one of Australia’s finest archers.

Karen Hudson also continued her recent good form shooting a personal best score to take second place with Tamworth veteran, Neville White grabbing third place.

Greg Scott monstered the field in a very competitive Sighted contest to score an impressive win putting together 2 rounds of precision archery. Stuart Dolbel had to call on all his experience to hold of Narrabri’s John Finn by just 2 points in a very close battle for the minor placings.

Darrell Hudson put together a very impressive showing to finish the day on top in the Traditional ranks with a top class score with Peter Stubbs also in good form taking second with Michael Patrick in third.

Zac Hayne shot extremely well to score the win in the Junior Sighted division from Sebastian Donovan with the rapidly improving Lachlan Boyd in third.

Other archers to impress included Haylee Murrell, William Loftus and Kaytlyn Murrell.

The club will be holding a working bee this weekend to prepare for the upcoming NSW State 3D championships with the next club shoot set down for August 7^th. This shoot will be a 2 round 3D event and will be the final hit out for club members before the State tournament.

ABA 24th July 2011 Outback Range

Taree Branch Championships: NVA Medal Haul.

Namoi Valley Archers scored 9 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Northern NSW Branch ABA Championships held at Taree over the weekend. The championships were held over 3 rounds with competitors shooting in light rain during Sunday’s closing round.

Wade Hudson started the event as a strong favourite to win the Masters Compound division and showed all the attributes of a champion to win by 76 points after putting together 3 superb rounds. Hudson also received the honour of being elevated to the elite Grand Master Bowmen status after this shoot. This highly sort after award is given to barebow archers who shoot over 700 points at 3 consecutive official shoots, a very rare feat.

Karen Hudson was the standout female barebow compound archer winning the Womens Masters event in style in a welcome return to form. Officials believe this is the first time a mother and son have won the Masters divisions at a Northern NSW Branch championships.

Ann Stubbs shot well to take the silver in the Womens A grade compound event with Jarrod Stubbs finishing with the bronze in the Mens A grade contest.

Wendi Murrell scored a convincing win in the B grade division and must be on the verge of promotion to A grade in the very near future.

Ben Stubbs added to the medal haul taking the silver in C grade.

Darrell Hudson was pushed all the way by Taree’s Karl Peck but pulled away for an impressive win in Recurve A grade with Peter Stubbs taking the bronze. Mark Stevenson won the Freestyle Recurve division with a consistent performance over the 3 rounds.

Namoi dominated the Bowhunter Unlimited event with John Finn shooting brilalliantly to win the Flight 1 contest with Lloyd Jauja turning in a griity performance to grab the silver.

Greg Scott defeated some quality archers to take top spot in the Flight 2 section and will be moving up to Flight 1 based on this performance.

Denise Stevenson finished with the bronze after a spirited contest with 2 archers from Gloucester in Freestyle Limited.

Lachlan Scott finished with the silver after a very tense contest with Newcastle archer, Jarrod Morrissey, in the Junior Bowhunter Unlimited event. Scott held a narrow lead after the first 2 rounds but Morrissey just did enough during the last round to edge in front.

Haylee Murrell shot well to finish second in Cub Compound B grade with sisters, Kaytlyn and Emylie finishing first and second in D grade.

Stacey Scott rounded out the medal haul with a fine win in Cub Freestyle Unlimited after 3 solid rounds.

The club will be back in action this Sunday with a 2 round ABA event set down for a 9.00am start with a sausage sizzle between rounds.

Delta Targets On The Outback Range

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow Delta round on Sunday with a big field taking to the Outback range in perfect winter conditions with Ken Thompson, Darrell Hudson, Zac Hayne and Haylee Murrell all setting new club records on the day.

The full colour Delta animal targets provide a unique challenge with anatomically correct score zones giving a very small margin of error with archers having to decide on taking a safer shot for less points or going for maximum points and risk dropping out of the scoring zone by just a few centimetres and receiving no points.

Wendi Murrell scored an impressive win in the Compound division to edge out Karen Hudson in a tight contest with Steve Jaeger grabbing third.

John Clark did just enough to score the win in the Sighted contest with Stuart Dolbel grabbing second place with Narrabri’s John Finn finishing in third.

Haylee Murrell won the battle of the sisters finshing on top in Cub Compound with Kaytlyn Murrell in second and Emylie Murrell in third.

The next club shoot will be held on July 10 and will be the final opportunity for archers to prepare for the Northern NSW Branch ABA Titles to be held at Taree.

Namoi Valley Archers sent a 12 member team to Gloucester for the Pacific Region IFAA Championships which were held over 4 days. Competitors faced some of the toughest shooting conditions seen at a major tournament with the big wet soaking the ranges and competitors over the event with some areas of the venue resembling a quagmire by the time the event was completed. The International Field Archery Association (IFAA) competition is a very technical test of archery ability with competitors required to shoot 4 arrows at 28 targets each day at distances extending out to 80 yards.

Wade Hudson finished the tournament as the top barebow archer scoring a wonderful win in Mens Bowhunter A grade finishing with a 36 point winning margin outscoring his nearest opponent in 3 of the 4 rounds. This win confirms Hudson as the best barebow archer in Australia across all disciplines after winning the World Bowhunter title and the Australian ABA title earlier in the year. This is a remarkable feat given the difference in the 3 events and underlines Hudson’s ability to adapt to each different discipline. Ken Thompson has also enjoyed a fantastic year and scored a fine win in Freestyle Limited Recurve B grade shooting with great consistency across the 4 rounds with club mate Mark Stevenson taking second. Karen Hudson was another archer to perform extremely well taking the win in Womens Bowhunter B grade by a big margin with Ann Stubbs finishing with the silver in A grade after a tenacious performance. Jodi Dolbel was ecstatic with her bronze medal in the Freestyle Unlimited division returning to competition after an extended break. Dolbel thought her tilt at the titles was over after her bow failed in preparation for the event. Undaunted, Dolbel was fortunate enough to quickly source replacement and worked overtime to get the new bow ready for the championships. Phillip Greenwood showed great mental toughness to finish with a hard earned silver medal in a very competitive Recurve B grade contest with just 17 points separating the top four competitors. Junio,r Shane Thompson, rounded out the medal haul with a very well deserved win in Freestyle Limited Recurve B grade adding another medal to his overflowing trophy cabinet.

The next club shoot will be a Delta round set down for June 26^th. Club members are advised there will be no indoor archery this Thursday as the PCYC hall is unavailable.

After a very successful World Championship campaign Namoi Valley Archers competitors had just one rest day before launching into the 2011 Australian ABA Championships at Wagga Wagga. The championships were held over two days with competitors shooting 2 rounds each day. The Gunnedah club had it’s biggest ever representation at an Australian tournament with 27 archers competing bringing home an amazing 10 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals in a dominating performance.

Wade Hudson backed up his World championship success to win the elite Masters Compound division with a brilliant 54 point margin. Hudson, the defending champion, stamped his authority on the event from the first round to score an imposing win. Hudson has show incredible mental composure over 6 days of competition in both the World Bowhunter and Australian Championships refusing to allow the weigh of expectations or the pressure of the big occasion affect his performance. Hudson made it double gold as a member of the winning Northern NSW Branch outfit in the Branch Teams competition.

Ken Thompson scored the gold in Freestyle Recurve with a top class performance over four rounds to score a big win.

Wendi Murrell was ecstatic with her first Australian gold medal after winning the Compound B grade event by 26 points. Murrell has been the big improver at club events over the last few months and with this performance must be on the verge of a well earned promotion to A grade.

Phillip Greenwood also showed fine form to take the gold in the Veteran Barebow event. Greg Scott scored a fine silver medal at his first Australian Championships finishing just 4 points from top spot in an ultra competitive Bowhunter Unlimited contest.

Bronze medals went to Darrell Hudson in Recurve A grade, Ann Stubbs in Compound A grade and Mark Stevenson in Longbow C grade.

The club’s junior archers performed extremely well with Sebastian Donovan bouncing back from equipment problems to win the Junior Freestyle Unlimited Flight 1 gold medal with Zac Hayne taking silver in Flight 2 missing the gold by just 2 points with Lachlan Scott in third.

Shane Thompson continued his superb World Championships form to claim the Australian title in Junior Freestyle Recurve with Bonnie Hayne winning the Junior Freestyle Limited event.

Jarrod Stubbs showed incredible courage to take the silver in Junior Compound A grade using crutches to walk between targets after an accident had threatened to derail his campaign. Stubbs also claimed a well earned gold as part of the winning Northern NSW Junior team.

Haylee Murrell scored a big win in Cub Girls Compound B grade with club mate, Stacey Scott, finishing third. Sister act, Kaytlyn and Emylie Murrell scored a 1-2 finish in the Cub D grade Compound event.

Sophie Donovan rounded off a wonderful week of competition claiming the Australian title in Cub Freestyle Limited shooting very consistently over the four round tournament

World 3D Results

Namoi Valley Archers sent a 23 person team to the 2011 World Bowhunter Championships held in Wagga Wagga scoring an incredible 4 World Titles , 3 silver and 2 bronze medals in a wonderful team performance.

The tournament was held over 4 days, consisting of two 3D and two paper targets rounds and competitors faced four very difficult courses with designers making clever use of the terrain.

Wade Hudson was crowned World champion in the Bowhunter Compound division after recording a superb 78 point win. Hudson held the lead after the first round but slipped back to second at the conclusion of day two. Undeterred Hudson came out firing on day three surging back into the lead and showing all the qualities expected of a World champion Hudson shut the opposition out with a brilliant final day performance to claim a well deserved win.

Ken Thompson claimed the World title in Freestyle Recurve with a gutsy performance over the four rounds to edge out Jan Van Dijck from the Netherlands by 20 points. Thompson was outscored by the Dutch competitor in three of the four rounds but put together a brilliant 3D round to secure enough points for a very memorable win. Thompson freely admits that 3D is not his favourite discipline but he showed real mental toughness to secure his first World title.

Shane Thompson, competing in his second World Championship event in 12 months, added to the family celebrations by grabbing the World title in Junior Freestyle Recurve with the foundation of the win built on 2 top class paper target rounds.

Sophie Donovan made it four World titles for the Gunnedah club taking out the Cub Freestyle Limited event with a very consistent display of archery over the four day tournament.

Denise Stevenson grabbed a silver medal in Freestyle Limited turning in top class display over the four rounds, a very well deserved reward for hours spent at the practice butts.

Phillip Greenwood also won a silver medal in Veterans Bowhunter Recurve with a determined performance across four tough rounds.

Stacey Scott turned in her best ever performance to score a wonderful silver medal in Cub Girls Compound. Scott thrived on the pressure of the big occasion improving each day the tournament progressed finishing second by just one from the third placed competitor in a superb display.

Junior, Lachlan Scott, won the bronze medal in Freestyle Unlimited after an incredible three way contest with the event won by Quirin Knaack from Switzerland with Anton Dreyer from South Africa taking second. In a brilliant performance Scott finished just ten points from the winner and only four points from second place in an incredibly tense contest that left the competitors mentally drained.

Jarrod Stubbs rounded out the medal tally with a wonderful bronze medal in Junior Bowhunter Compound. Stubbs was not even expected to compete in the event after an accident left him on crutches, the bronze medal a wonderful testimony to his desire to get onto the range for such a big event.

3D: Testing The New Outback 3D Range

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round 3D event on Sunday in very windy conditions. Adding to the challenge competitors were shooting on a newly constructed 3D range which featured some very challenging uphill and downhill shots which made high scoring very difficult.

This event was the last opportunity for competitors to gain valuable practice leading into the 2011 World Bowhunter Championships to be held in Wagga Wagga with Ken Thompson and Haylee Murrell showing their preparation is right on track with both setting new club records in their respective divisions.

Wendi Murrell scored a confidence building win in the Compound contest with Karen Hudson taking second and Ann Stubbs third.

Darrell Hudson finished the day as the top Traditional archer after compiling two tidy rounds with Matt Sinclair shooting well to take second and Mark Stevenson shooting a personal best to finish third.

Stuart Dolbel led the field home in a hotly contested Sighted division securing the win by just 2 points from John Clark with Lloyd Jauja also shooting well to finish third.

Zac Hayne was the best of the Junior Sighted archers with Sebastian Donovan just 2 points away in second with rapidly improving newcomer Ben Martin in third.

Haylee Murrell secured a big win in Cub Compound with Kaytlyn Murrell in second and Stacey Scott in third.

Haylee Murrell and Sammy Patrick set new club records on the day with Murrell breaking the mark for Cub Girl Compound archers that has stood for over ten years.

Greg Donovan recorded the highest score of the day with a top class performance scoring a very impressive win in the Sighted division. Stuart Dolbel had to work hard to grab second spot from Greg Scott in a spirited contest.

Coonabarabran archer, Phillip Greenwood has put together a string of good performances since joining the club at the beginning of the year and returned his best result of the year on Sunday scoring a superb win in the Traditional contest taking first place withan excellent 2 round score. Namoi Valley Archers held the first 3D event for the year on Sunday with a big field competing in perfect summer weather conditions. The competition was held over 2 rounds with the day starting with a 3 arrow round followed by the high pressure 1 arrow round. Course designers Greg Donovan, Lloyd Jauja and Stuart Dolbel presented a top class layout for the day with superb target placement testing archers of all abilities. The Sighted division was hotly contested with John Clark returning two solid rounds to claim the win from Stuart Dolbel who just held off a much improved Greg Scott in a tense battle for the minor placings. Wendi Murrell continued her recent run of good form scoring an impressive win in the Compound contest with Karen Hudson taking second place with Ann Stubbs in third. Darrell Hudson continued his dominance in the Traditional event with Phillip greenwood grabbing second with Michael Patrick in third. Maitland ABA Results. 3D This Weekend.

The 2011 Northern NSW regional archery circuit kicked off over the weekend with 120 competitors on hand for the first 2 day tournament of the year held at Maitland in very hot and oppressive conditions. 22 archers from Gunnedah made the trip returning with 10 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals underlining the depth of archery talent in the local club.

The tournament was an ABA event commencing on Saturday morning with a 3 arrow round followed by the high pressure 1 arrow round on Saturday afternoon with the event wrapping up on Sunday with a 2 arrow all count round.

Darrell Hudson was in brilliant form scoring an impressive win in Recurve A grade winning by over 200 pints from Taree’s Karl Peck with another Gunnedah archer, Peter Stubbs in third. Hudson put his stamp on the event from the beginning setting a new Branch record in the 3 arrow round and finishing the weekend with a stunning display in the 2 arrow round.

Denise Stevenson was another archer in record breaking form setting a new record in the Bowhunter Limited division for the 1 arrow round on her way to a superb win over a duo from Gloucester.

Mark Stevenson scored a good win in Longbow C grade while Greg Scott scored the silver in a crack Bowhunter Unlimited Flight 2 field missing the win by just 2 points after a hard fought battle with Tony Gavan from the Central Coast. Peter Bush took silver in Bowhunter Unlimited Flight 1 after a very solid performance.

The club’s female compound archers performed extremely well with Karen Hudson taking gold in the Masters contest, Ann Stubbs finishing 3rd in A grade and Wendi Murrell shooting brilliantly to take B grade.

Nathan Murrell grabbed the silver in A grade in the Mens competition.

The strength of Gunnedah’s junior archery program was evident with Sebastian Donovan taking gold in Freestyle Unlimited Flight 1 and Zac Hayne and Lachlan Scott finishing 1 -2 in Flight 2. Both Hayne and Scott must be on the verge of a well deserved promotion to the elite Flight 1 category based on their recent outstanding form.

Jarrod Stubbs scored the silver in the A grade Compound event while Stacey Scott and Haylee Murrell scored the quinella in Cub Compound B grade with sisters Kaytlyn Murrell and Emylie Murrell also scored a 1-2 finish in Cub Compound D grade.

Sophie Donovan showed her liking for the Maitland layout scoring a runaway win in the Cub Freestyle Limited contest setting a new Branch record in the 3 arrow round with an outstanding display of precision archery. Donovan now holds the Branch record for both the 3 arrow and 1 arrow ABA rounds with both record scores shot at Maitland.

The focus returns to club activities this weekend with a 2 round 3D event set down for Sunday with a sausage sizzle between rounds.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow animal round on Sunday with a big field taking to the redesigned Boundary range. Course designers, Matt Wittman and Gordon White completely overhauled the range during the summer break presenting a top class course that tested the competitors abilities to the limit. The big talking points after the event were the opening shot which featured a long shot across the dam and a very cleverly placed uphill shot which managed to bring several competitors undone. Darrell Hudson led home a very competitive Traditional field turning in a very impressive round with Peter Stubbs bouncing back to top form to take second with Coonabarabran’s Phillip Greenwood taking third. Wade Hudson proved far too strong in the Compound division scoring a good win from Tamworth veteran, Neville White with Wendi Murrell shooting very well to take third. Matt Wittman had to use all his local knowledge to hold off a very strong field in the Sighted contest just edging out Tamworth duo, Robbie Austen and Ben McCulloch in a very tense contest. Zac Hayne showed his class scoring a good win in the Junior Sighted event with Sebastian Donovan in second and Kai Morris third. First Shoot for 2011

Namoi Valley Archers started the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon with a very well attended 3 arrow ABA round followed by a b-b-q. The Outback range took on a different look with the late afternoon sun streaming through the trees making some targets extremely difficult to shoot. The club was joined by 3 members from the Lake Glenbawn club who dropped in for the shoot. Karen Hudson started the year in fine form winning the Compound division with a handy score. Ann Stubbs did just enough to hold off Wendi Murrell in a close battle for the minor placings. Lake Glenbawn’s Simon Gallen and local archer John Clark finished the day tied for first in the Sighted contest with another Lake Glenbawn archer, Gary Dawson just 2 points behind in second and local, Greg Donovan a further 2 points back in third. Sebastian Donovan led a crack Junior Sighted field home with Zac Hayne taking second and Lachlan Scott in third. The next club shoot will he held on February 13^TH.

2010 Awards Night

Namoi Valley Archers wrapped a highly successful 2010 season with a combined AGM and Presentation night. The prestigious Club Person of the Year was awarded to Greg Donovan for his outstanding efforts behind the scenes. Greg made it a double celebration by finishing the year as the Mens Open champion and overall highest points scorer for the year. The Dave Dickson shield for the most improved archer was deservedly won by Nathan Murrell with the much sought after Party Animal of the Year going to Bernie Hayne. 2010 was another excellent year for the club with one of the highlights being the successful hosting of the Northern NSW Branch ABA Titles which attracted a quality field to Gunnedah. Another big highlight for archery in Gunnedah involved 3 club members, Ken Thompson, Matt Wittman and Shane Thompson, travelling to Germany as past of the Australian team for the 2010 World IFAA Championships. 2011 is shaping up as a huge year with the World Bowhunting Championships being held in Wagga Wagga in April with a strong contingent from Gunnedah planning to compete. The club has been selected to host the 2011 NSW State 3D championships in August and the clubs range designers have already begun planning for the event. The club will launch the new season with the first club shoot for 2011 set down for January 29^th. The club executive for 2011 stays the same with peter Stubbs filling the President’s role, John Clark, Secretary and Stuart Dolbel as Treasurer.

Namoi Valley Archers dominated the Northern NSW Branch 3D Championships held at Taree recently winning 8 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals. The club scored double gold in the Bowhunter Unlimited division with Lloyd Jauja turning in his best performance of the year to win the elite Flight 1 putting together 3 quality rounds with Warwick Shepherd taking the bornze. Greg Scott also shot a personal best to win Flight 2 in the same division. Greg Donovan received the good news that he had achieved promotion to Freestyle Unlimited Flight 1 at the start of the shoot and justified the promotion with a fine display of archery to earn the bronze medal in a crack field. Wade Hudson had to work hard for the win in Mens Masters but eventually pulled away from his competition to score the win. Nathan Murrell was another archer to really hit from when it mattered scoring the silver medal in a very competitive A grade Compound contest. Karen Hudson was in a class of her own scoring the win in Womens Masters with club mates, Wendi Murrell and Ann Stubbs taking the silver and bronze medals in A grade compound. Darrell Hudson dominated the A grade Recurve event showing his class to score an all the way win with Peter Stubbs taking the B grade title after a tense contest with Taree local Karl Peck. Stubbs celebrated the win by being promoted to A grade for future events. The club’s Junior archers performed extremely well with Sebastian Donovan scoring the silver in Freestyle Unlimited Flight 1. The club swept the board in Freestyle Unlimited Flight 2 with Zac Hayne holding off a strong challenge from Lachlan Scott to secure the win with Jack Shepherd grabbing third. Jarrod Stubbs finished second in a top class A grade compound event with Stacey Scoot also shooting well to finish second in Cub B grade compound. Kaytlyn and Emylie Murrell rounded out the medal haul with a 1-2 finish in Cub Compound D grade.

Karen Hudson proved too strong in the Compound contest scoring the win from the improving Wendi Murrell with Nathan Murrell grabbing third. Darrell Hudson was in superb form in the Traditional division scoring a comprehensive win with Peter Stubbs finishing second with Greg Scoot in third. John Clark turned in a steady round to win the Sighted contest with Chris Paull shooting well to finish second with Greg Donovan in third. Zac Hayne has really improved over the last few events and he continued his recent great form to secure the win in Junior Sighted with Sebastian Donovan in second and Shane Thompson in third.

3D Round Attracts 60 Shooters

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round 3D event on Sunday with the biggest field in club history in attendance. Organizers were swamped with entries with archers from Tamworth, Moonbi, Manilla and Murrundi boosting numbers to over 60 for the day. Course designers, Greg Donovan and Lloyd Jauja delivered a top class layout for the day with archers tested by targets cleverly placed in the natural terrain. Tamworth archers dominated the Sighted contest with Ben Mc Culloch showing his 3D prowess scoring a very narrow win over renowned hunter, Brad Smith with Robbie Austin grabbing third in a hotly contested division. Karen Hudson turned in another brilliant performance to win the Compound event putting together 2 top class rounds with veteran Tamworth archer, Neville White taking second from Ann Stubbs who finished third. Darrell Hudson was another archer in fine form scoring a decisive win in the Traditional division with Peter Stubbs returning to form to take second place with Sharon Boyd finishing third. Zac Hayne scored a great win in the Junior Sighted beating home a crack field after scoring well in both rounds just edging out Lachlan Scott in a very tight contest with Sebastian Donovan in third. The Cub Sighted division was won by Sophie Donovan with Callum Urquhart taking second with Lachlan Boyd just doing enough to finish third. The next club shoot will be held on November 21^st.

Mark and Denise Stevenson have just returned from the Pan Pacific Masters games held on the Gold Coast. Over 11,000 athletes converged on the Gold Coast for the games with over 30 sports represented. Mark Stevenson finished with the Gold medal in the Longbow division for archers 50-60 years while Denise Stevenson also won Gold in the Freestyle Limited division for archers 50-60 years. Competition was held over 5 rounds with a mixture of ABA and 3D rounds.

Big Field For The Tough Delta Round

Namoi Valley Archers held a 20 target Delta round on Sunday with the biggest field of the year taking to the Outback range. Some excellent scores were returned on the day with Darrell Hudson, Kaytlyn Fuller, John Clark, Karen Hudson, Haylee Murrell and Sophie Donovan all setting club records in their respective divisions. Karen Hudson led the field home in the Compound division setting a new club record on her way to victory. Wendi Murrell continued her recent good form posting an impressive score to finish second with Ken Hill grabbing third with an encouraging performance. John Clark finished the day on top in the Sighted contest with Greg Donovan taking second place while Gordon White just edged past a big pursuing pack to grab third. Darrell Hudson was in a class of his own posting a big win in the Traditional division with Mark Stevenson shooting very well to finish second with Peter Stubbs in third. Sebastian Donovan turned in the top score in the Junior Sighted divison with Kaytlyn Fuller and Rannon Fuller filling the minor placings. The club will be back in action this Sunday with the very popular 3D targets making their final appearance for the year.

Namoi Valley Archers have been performing extremely well on the international and regional scene over the last few weeks posting some outstanding results. Gunnedah’s 3 representatives at the World IFAA Championships held in Dahn, Germany faced some of the toughest ranges ever used for a World event. The ranges featured extreme uphill shots through dense forest which really challenged archers technique. On some ranges competitors were required to use rope ladders to aid them climb to the shooting points with some archers forced to pull out due to the extreme physical requirements of the course. A big talking point was the shots from high in castle ruins which are a feature of the Dahn area. Competitors were treated wonderfully well by the local population with an opening parade of competitors assembled in National groups a real highlight. Each day of competition saw the 700 plus competitors assemble in the town centre before moving out onto the ranges. Due to the large number of competitors and the distance between targets competitors were required to walk many kilometres per day with rounds taking over 8 hours each day to complete. The 2010 World Championships were a watershed for Australian archery with the selected 7 member Australian team winning the prestigious Team of Nations crown for the first time with host nations, Germany in second and England taking third.

Matt Wittman put together a superb performance over the 5 rounds to finish a very creditable 28^th out of a field of 83 in the premier division in field archery, Freestyle Unlimited. This was a top class result for Wittman who at just 18 gave away years of experience to most of the field and underlines his ranking as one of the country’s best young archers. Ken Thompson finished 27^th in a field of 43 in the Recurve Freestyle Limited divison shooting very well in extremely difficult conditions. This style of archery in extremely popular in Europe and Thompson acquitted himself well against a high calibre field. Shane Thompson finished a very creditable 4^thin Junior Recurve Freestyle Limited. Thompson shot right up to his ability but could not quite bridge the difference to his fellow competitors with the gold going to a German archer, the silver to an English archer and the bronze to a competitor from Portugal.

Namoi Valley Archers had 6 representatives at the Northern NSW Branch ABA Invitation tournament held in Taree recently with the Hudson family scoring triple gold. Wade Hudson was in top form winning the Masters division after another fine display. Karen Hudson turned in her best ever score winning A grade Compound, becoming the first female barebow archer from Namoi Valley Archers to break the magical 700 point barrier in official competition. Darrell Hudson celebrated his promotion to Recurve A grade scoring a dominant win returning 3 top class rounds. David Buckingham scored the silver in Bowhunter Unlimited with Denise Stevenson also finishing second in Bowhunter Limited.

5 archers made the long trip to Wagga Wagga on the weekend to compete in the NSW 3D championships returning with an impressive 4 gold and 1 bronze medals. Ann Stubbs scored gold in Compound B grade shooting with great consistency over the 2 day tournament. Denise Stevenson added to her recent good performances by winning Bowhunter Limited with Mark Stevenson also winning gold in Freestyle Unlimited to make it a family double. Peter Stubbs shot well over the weekend to finish 3^rd in B grade Recurve while outstanding junior, Jarrod Stubbs rounded out the medal haul with a superb gold medal in A grade compound.

Nathan Murrell did just enough to grab third place and family bragging rights, from a fast finishing Wendi Murrell. Haylee Murrell finished the day as the top Cub compound archer with Stacey Scott in second with Kaytlyn Murrell in third. The next club shoot will be a change from the normal shoot day with the event to be held on Saturday 4^th September with a 1pm start to avoid clashing with Fathers day.

Husband and wife team Darryl and Karen Hudson tore up the range and shredded it on Sunday busting their respective division club records that had been standing since 2006, oddly enough set by themselves on almost the same shoot date as this record smashing performance, well done team Hudson.

3D Round Challenges Local Archers

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round 3D event on Sunday with a big field competing in perfect winter weather conditions. Course designers Lloyd Jauja and Greg Donovan set a very challenging course with the main talking point the very realistic crocodile target which was set right on the edge of the waterline in a dam.

Any archer going low on this target saw their arrow end in the water. Ann Stubbs turned in a superb performance to finish the day as the top compound archer with a very impressive score. Wendi Murrell was another archer reveling in the conditions shooting a personal best to finish second with Ken Hill grabbing third place. John Clark proved too steady in the sighted contest putting together 2 tidy rounds to score the win from Stuart Dolbel who just held off fast finishingTamworth visitor, Andrew Springall, in a close battle for the minor placings.

Darrell Hudson was in fine form in the traditional contest scoring a big win with Greg Scott grabbing second place after a very tense battle with Peter Stubbs.

Lachlan Scott was another archer in fine form scoring a great win in a very competitive junior sighted division. Jack Shepherd pipped Sebastian Donovan by just 2 points in a great contest for the minor placings. The next club shoot is set down for August 22^nd with a 9.00am start.

Gunnedah’s 3 representatives at the World Field Archery Championships in Germany are performing well after 2 days of competition. Matt Wittman competing in Freestyle Unlimited is a very respectable 29th in a field of 94. Matt had a slow start in the first round but had a much improved second round. It was a similar story for Ken Thompson who is competing in Freestyle Recurve, a much improved second round has him lying 27^th in a field of 43. Shane Thompson, competing in Junior Freestyle Recurve is currently 4^th but will have to shoot exceptionally well to overtake the third placed archer.

Pan Pacific Masters, Nov 2010

Field Archery at the Pan Pacific Masters Games

Field Archery will be one of the major sports on the program at the 7^th Pan Pacific Masters Games to be held on the Gold Coast in Australia from 6 to 14 November, 2010.

There will be 34 sports on the program, with more than 10,000 people from all over the world expected to converge on the Gold Coast to participate.

The Pan Pacific Masters Games is a celebration of master’s sport with both fierce and friendly competition and a jam-packed entertainment program at the Games Village at the end of each day.

The minimum age requirement for Field Archery is 30 years. The event divisions include: Barebow Recurve, Barebow Compound, Longbow, Bowhunter Recurve, Bowhunter Compound (Finger Release), Bowhunter Compound (Release Aid), Freestyle Recurve, Freestyle Compound (Finger Release) and Freestyle Compound (Release Aid).

The competition will be held at Pacific Bowmen in Reedy Creek.

All sports are located in close proximity to the Games Village at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach. The Games Village will feature the registration centre, merchandise, live nightly entertainment, fully catered hospitality and an exclusive venue for competitors to meet up and enjoy the spirit the event is known for.

Being held on the Gold Coast also means that participants can enjoy the golden sands of the surf beaches, choose from a huge range of accommodation for all budgets, visit the exciting theme parks and relax at some great restaurants, bars and cafes.

IFAA Nationals

Namoi Valley Archers was represented by a ten member team at the 2010 IFAA Australian Championships held in Orange over the long weekend. The tournament was conducted over four days with competitors shooting 2 Field, and 2 Hunter rounds. Each round required competitors to shoot 4 arrows at each of the 28 targets with marked distances ranging from 10 to 80 yards. The tournament was held in extremely difficult weather conditions with Friday providing frigid temperatures with a maximum of just 6 degrees. Karen Hudson scored an emphatic win in Bowhunter B grade putting together a very consistent performance to score a memorable win. The club scored gold in both the B grade and C grade Recurve Freestyle Limited events with Ken Thompson shooting well to take the B grade while Mark Stevenson showed his recent hard work has paid off grabbing the gold in C grade. Bernie Hayne enjoyed a great tournament scoring his first national IFAA gold after scoring a wonderful win in Freestyle Unlimited C grade. Hayne jumped to the lead on round 1 and outscored his opposition in every round. Greg Donovan turned in a fine display in a very competitive Freestyle Unlimited B grade event shooting really well to finish third. Matt Wittman turned in a very admirable performance among the country’s elite archers finishing a very creditable 7^th in A grade stringing together some very impressive scores. Darrell Hudson had a titanic battle in Recurve Bowhunter B grade over the four day tournament, eventually finishing second to South Australian Alan Murray in a memorable contest. Sebastian Donovan turned in a brilliant performance to win Junior Freestyle Unlimited A grade underlining his growing reputation as one of the country’s best young archers. Zac Hayne is another youngster on the rise and his win in Freestyle Unlimited B grade is further evidence of his improvement over the last year. Shane Thompson rounded out the medal haul with a silver medal in Junior Freestyle Limited Recurve with a typically determined performance.

The club held a Delta round on Sunday for those archers not competing at Orange with archers competing in perfect winter conditions. John Clark finished the day on top in the sighted division after a very spirited battle with Stuart Dolbel with Warwick Shepherd in third. Tamworth veteran, Neville White, finished the day as the top barebow exponent with Ann Stubbs also shooting well to finish second with Greg Scott in third.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round 3D event on Sunday with the biggest field of the year on hand to compete in perfect weather conditions. The field included visitors from Tamworth, Murrurundi, Cessnock and Taree which gave the day an added dimension. Course designers, Greg Donovan and Lloyd Jauja set a very tough course with targets cleverly placed amongst the bush and fallen timber maximizing the challenge. Wade Hudson set a cracking pace in the Compound division to score an excellent win from Tamworth archer, Neville White in second place with Karen Hudson grabbing third after a close battle with Ann Stubbs. Darrell Hudson fought hard to record a win in the Traditional contest with peter Stubbs in second and Mark Stevenson in third. John Clark compiled a tidy round to finish on top in the Sighted division with Greg Donovan also shooting well to take second with Brandon Thrift just holding off a big pack for third, Sebastian Donovan proved too good in the Junior Sighted contest with Lachlan Scott shooting well to take second place with Shane Thompson in third. The next club shoot will be an IFAA round set down for May 16. This will give competitors a chane to prepared for the IFAA tournament to be held in Gloucester on the 22^nd and 23^rd of May.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 14 target IFAA round on Sunday with competitors taking the opportunity to gain valuable match practice for this weekend’s NSW State IFAA championships to be held in Gloucester. The IFAA round is a highly technical test of archery ability with competitors required to shoot 4 arrows per target at marked distances with the longest target set at 80 yards. Matt Wittman set the highest score of the day to score a comfortable win in the sighted division. Wittman got off to a slow start but stormed home scoring a perfect score on each of the last 5 targets. John Clark returned a solid round to finish second with Greg Donovan finishing third. Ken Hill finished the day as the top compound archer after compiling an excellent round with Karen Hudson grabbing second place with Nathan Murrell finishing in third. Juniors, Sebastian Donovan and Zac Hayne turned on a first class contest with Donovan just doing enough to record the win with both archers showing outstanding form. Nationals, NVA Shines

Namoi Valley Archers returned from the Australian Field Archery Championships held in Charleville, Queensland with a massive haul of 34 medals across the 2 disciplines contested over the Easter weekend. The club has big contingent of 20 archers at the 4 day tournament winning medals across all styles of archery underlining the clubs’ all round strength. Australian championships were contested in the ABA National event held over 4 rounds and the 3D event held over 2 rounds. The organizers made a major change in the ABA National event this year dropping one of the 3 arrow rounds for a 2 arrow all count round on Sunday while the 3D event was contested under the IFAA rules which will be used at the 2011 World Bowhunter Championships to be held in Wagga Wagga.

Wade Hudson stamped himself as the best barebow compound archer in the country winning both the ABA and 3D titles in the elite Masters division with a sublime display of precision archery. Hudson was streets ahead of his opposition in both events winning the ABA crown by 74 points and the 3D event by a massive 113 points. A remarkable achievement as Hudson has had limited time on the range due to his studies at the University of New England. Hudson also achieved the rare feat of winning four gold medals at the championships, after being selected in the Northern NSW team which won both the ABA team event and the 3D team event. Organizers were so impressed with the level of Hudson’s performance that his scores were announced round by round at the presentation in acknowledgement of his prowess over the tournament.

The club finished with a total of 9 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals in the ABA Championships. Matt Wittman had a wonderful tournament finishing with the silver medal in the premier sighted division, Freestyle Unlimited -Flight 1. Wittman was tied for the lead after the first 2 rounds but lost ground during the 2 arrow round and despite turning in a brilliant last round Wittman could not close the gap. This was a superb performance by Wittman who at just 18 gave away years of experience to his opposition. Greg Donovan scored a big win in Freestyle Unlimited – Flight 2 with a terrific performance across the 4 rounds and will be joining Matt Wittman in the elite Flight 1 after this outstanding showing with club mate Gordon White also shooting well to take third. Ken Thompson scored another an Australian title taking out the Freestyle Limited Recurve event with a dominating performance while Lloyd Jauja took home the silver in Bowhunter Unlimited - Flight 2 missing out on top spot by just 6 points. Bernie Hayne finished with the silver in the Hunter division with a typically courageous display showing real strength of character across the 4 day tournament. Denise Stevenson seems to have found her home in Freestyle Limited showing some excellent form to win the silver medal with a consistent display across the 4 rounds. The clubs’ traditional archers performed well with mark Stevenson winning his first Australian medal taking out the Longbow Modern event posting some top scores across the weekend. Peter Stubbs finished with the silver in the Recurve B grade contest with club mate Darrell Hudson taking third. Stubbs was right in contention for the win after the first day of competition but the eventual winner found another gear to finish too strongly for Stubbs to take the win. The newly promoted Ann Stubbs rounded out the medal haul with a great display in Compound B grade to take the silver medal. The clubs junior archers also performed extremely well with Matthew Jauja showing his class to take the Freestyle Unlimited – Flight 1 crown with a dominant display while Zac Hayne underlined his rapid improvement to finish with gold in Freestyle Unlimited – Flight 2. Shane Thompson shot particularly well to take the title in Freestyle Recurve with youngsters Krystal Jauja, Freestyle Unlimited and Sophie Donovan, Freestyle Limited both taking home Australian gold medals in the Cub competition.

The club also dominated in the 3D event winning 9 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals. Matt Wittman again showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s best up and coming archers scoring a bronze in the ultra competitive Freestyle Unlimited division. Greg Donovan stamped his class in Flight 2 of the same division with his second gold medal of the weekend with team mate Gordon White battling hard for third place. Ken Thompson scored double gold taking out the Freestyle Rcurve contest with another consistent performance and Lloyd Jauja grabbed bronze in a tough Bowhunter Unlimited - Flight 2 field with a polished display. Bernie Hayne showed his liking for the 3D style taking a silver in the Hunter division with Denise Stevenson shooting well to finish with the bronze in Freestyle Limited. Ann Stubbs scored an impressive win in Compound B grade, her first win in this division since her recent promotion while Karen Hudson battled equipment problems all weekend but did enough to take the bronze in Compound A grade showing her mental toughness over the 2 rounds. Longbow exponent Mark Stevenson added another gold to his collection with a win in Modern Longbow while Peter Stubbs finished third in Recurve B grade. The clubs junior brigade were once again on song with Shane Thompson to good for his opposition on his way to winning Freestyle Limited Recurve with Zac Hayne scoring well to take the Freestyle Unlimited – Flight 2 crown. Sebastian Donovan showed real tenacity to score a great second place in a very competitive Bowhunter Unlimited event underlining his recent surge in form. Cubs, Krystal Jauja and Sophie Donovan completed a golden weekend each taking their second gold medal in their respective divisions to complete a hugely successful tournament for the local club.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round ABA event on Sunday with a big field taking to the Outback range with many competitors taking the final opportunity to gain valuable match practice before the Australian Championships to be held in Charleville over the Easter long weekend. Some top class scores were recorded on the day with Karen Hudson, Ken Thompson and Sophie Donovan all setting new club records in their respective divisions. Matt Wittman found the new layout to his liking turning in a virtuoso display to leave the rest of the field floundering in his wake scoring a big win in the Sighted division. John Clark finished the day in second place with Tamworth visitor Brandon Thrift finishing third. Tamworth veteran, Neville White showed his class scoring the win in Compound with Karen Hudson shooting well to take second place with Ann Stubbs third. Sebastian Donovan proved too strong for his opposition in the Junior Sighted contest with Zac Hayne finishing second and newcomer Jack Shepherd shooting well to grab third spot. The next club shoot will be held on March 28^th and will be a 2 round ABA event with a B-B-Q lunch between rounds. NVA On Fire At Kempsey

Namoi Valley Archers was well represented at the first Northern NSW Branch tournament of the year with an 11 member team traveling to Kempsey for the 2 day 3D event. Competitors breathed a sigh of relief when the showers that had fallen on Friday night and Saturday morning cleared just as archers took to the ranges for start of competition with the remainder of the event held under fine conditions. The team turned in a dominant performance finishing with 7 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals. Peter Stubbs recorded a hard fought win in the B grade recurve division downing club mate and arch rival Darrel Hudson in a very satisfying performance. Stubbs was pushed all the way by Hudson and withstood the pressure to start the new year in fine style. Karen Hudson was in sensational form turning in a top class performance to score an outstanding win in B grade Compound with Amy Stubbs adding to the medal haul by grabbing bronze. Ann Stubbs also shot well winning the C Grade compound event and after a string of good performances must be due for a promotion to B grade in the very near future. Husband and wife team, Mark and Denise Stevenson, had a golden weekend with Mark scoring a breakthrough win in Modern Longbow and Denise winning Freestyle Limited Flight 2. Greg Donovan was another archer in great form winning Freestyle Unlimited Flight 2 with a quality performance and after a series of recent good results promotion to the elite Flight 1 must be just around the corner. Jarrod Stubbs scored the silver medal in a very competitive Junior A grade Compound division with Sebastian Donovan underlining his potential by finishing second in Junior Bowhunter Unlimited. Sophie Donovan flew the flag for the club in the cub division scoring the gold medal in Freestyle Limited with a very determined performance over the 2 day event. The next Branch 2 day tournament will be held in Maitland on March 21 and 22.

Namoi Valley Archers held the first 3D round of the year on Sunday with another big field taking to the ranges. The format for the day had archers shooting a 3 arrow round in the morning and a 1 arrow in the afternoon with a BBQ lunch between rounds. Range designers Lloyd Jauja and Greg Donovan presented archers with a challenging course making excellent use of broken ground to test competitors distance judgement. Matt Sinclair led the field home in the Sighted division returning a top class score with Greg Donovan grabbing second place with Matt Wittman in third. Wade Hudson dominated the Compound contest with Karen Hudson filling second spot and Ken Hill also shooting well to take third. Darrell Hudson finished on top in the Traditional division with Michael Patrick shooting well to take second with Peter Stubbs in third. Sebastian Donovan proved too good in the Junior Sighted division with James Bush filling second and newcomer Lachlan Scott making an excellent debut to take third. The next club shoot will be held on March 6^th.

Namoi Valley Archers kicked off the 2010 season on Sunday with a big field taking to the Outback range for a 3 arrow round with senior competitors trying the newly introduced Hunter peg for the first time. This new innovation will be used on all ABA ranges in 2010 and it is hoped it will prove popular with the hunting fraternity and see an increase it shoot numbers at both club and branch events. Despite light raining falling during the round some very good scores were recorded with visiting archer Pat Tydings recording the highest score for the day on his way to winning the sighted division just holding off Stuart Dolbel in a very close contest with Matthew Wittman just a few points away in third. Wade Hudson was in scintillating form scoring a decisive win in the Compound contest with Tamworth veteran Neville White turning in a good round to grab second with Karen Hudson third. Darrell Hudson started the year in fine form finishing the day a clear winner in the Traditional division with Peter Stubbs second and Michael Patrick third. James Bush and Shane Thompson turned on an exciting head to head duel in the Junior sighted contest with Bush just outlasting Thompson to record a very narrow win with Sebastian Donovan grabbing third. Namoi Valley Archers held a club event on Sunday with Range Captain, Matt Wittman, adding a new twist to the day by combining the circular IFAA faces with the 2 round ABA format. Competitors gave the day the thumbs up with some excellent scores recorded. Tamworth veteran, Neville White, turned in a masterful display to finish on top in the Compound division with a fast finishing Ann Stubbs also shooting well to take second place with Karen Hudson in third. John Clark shot very consistently to finish on top in the open division with Greg Donovan doing just enough to take second place by 2 points from Gordon White and Matt Jauja who tied for third. Jackelyn Patrick shot a personal best score on her way to the win in Cub Compound with Haylie Murrell in second and Kaytlyn Murrell in third.

Gunnedah archers, Ken and Shane Thompson competed in the NSW FITA Field Championships held at Armidale over the weekend with Shane shooting extremely well to finish in second place in the Cadet Recurve division with the winner setting a new Australian record. Ken Thomspon finished a creditable 4^th in the Adult Recurve event which featured a top class field including Australian Olympic representatives.

Branch 3D Title Success

Namoi Valley Archers sent 4 teams to the Northern NSW Branch Team 3D Challenge held in Gloucester over the weekend with 2 teams winning their respective divisions. This event is a new concept on the Branch calendar with each 3 member team shooting 2 qualifying rounds on Saturday with the top ranked teams progressing to Sunday’s shootout final. The format for the finals required each team member to shoot just one arrow at a 3D target set up in front of the assembled competitors and the high pressure format bought many teams undone. The team of Ann Stubbs, Karen Hudson and Amy Stubbs finished the qualifying rounds with the top ranking in the Women’s Compound event and progressed to Sunday’s final as a hot favourite but struck trouble in the final when Karen Hudson missed with her arrow but Ann and Amy Stubbs both scored allowing the team to post a score. The Gunnedah team then has a nervous wait as the other teams shot but their score could not be matched giving them the win. Namoi Valley Archers decided to field a composite team in the Mens Compound event with Recurve archers Darrell Hudson and Peter Stubbs joining compound star, Wade Hudson, for the event. The team struggled to match the top flight compound teams during the qualifying rounds doing just enough to make the final and just like the Gunnedah’s team were in a precarious position when Darrell Hudson’s arrow just skimmed the back of the target. Peter Stubbs scored with his arrow and Wade Hudson drove his arrow right into the bullseye giving the team a score. Amazingly, team after team cracked under the intense pressure and the Gunnedah boys celebrated in style when the last team failed to beat their score giving them an unlikely win and bragging rights over their opposition. The focus returns to club activities this weekend with a shoot set down for November 1^st.

State ABA, Gunnedah Show The Way

Namoi Valley Archers sent a 16 member team to the NSW State ABA Championships held at Gloucester over the long weekend returning with 7 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze medal in another top class performance by the club. Competitors faced very difficult conditions over the weekend with steady rain falling on both days and this, added to the tough ranges prepared for the event made top class scores hard to come by. The Gloucester ranges feature some very challenging shots with the ranges set in well forested country with gullies and some steep terrain making distance judgement difficult. The championships were conducted over 2 days with competitors shooting 2 x 20 target rounds on each day.

Wade Hudson reigned supreme in the Masters division finishing the championships as the overall highest Mens compound point scorer recording a comprehensive win. Hudson did not have it all his own way though trailing Robin Huckett by 2 points after the first day of competition but Hudson turned up the heat on the second day turning in 2 brilliant rounds which left Huckett floundering in his wake. Karen Hudson also turned in a quality performance scoring the trophy for the overall highest Womens compound score on her way to winning B grade with Amy Stubbs making it a quinella for the club in this division. Ann Stubbs was another archer to perform well scoring a superb victory in C grade setting the win up with a personal best score in the first round. Matthew Wittman and Ben Stubbs added to the medal haul scoring silver medals in B grade and C grade respectively. Darrell Hudson blitzed the field in the Recurve event scoring a runaway win from Tamworth’s Bruce Sherwood with Peter Stubbs grabbing third for the Gunnedah club. Gordon White had to battle hard for the win in Mens Freestyle Unlimited flight 2 holding off a surge from Kempsey veteran, Cec Apps, over the final 2 rounds to score a narrow 8 point win. Denise Stevenson finished with silver in the Womens Freestyle Unlimited contest and Ken Thompson also had to settle for silver running into a red hot local in Liam Mowbray in the Freestyle Recurve event. Matthew Jauja shot brilliantly over the weekend to score an excellent win in Junior Freestyle Unlimited and must be due for promotion to the top flight in the very near future. Shane Thompson also showed his class shooting very consistently over the four rounds to record the win in Freestyle recurve while Jarrod Stubbs rounded out the medal count with a well deserved second place in Junior A grade compound.

NVA Performs Well At State 3D

Namoi Valley Archers scored 3 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals at the NSW State 3D Championships held at Tuggerah over the weekend in another strong club performance. The Tuggerah ranges are located in lush coastal forest with the range designers offering a very challenging layout for the championships. Wade Hudson confirmed his ranking as one of the best barebow compound archers in the country with a brilliant performance over the four rounds to finish the weekend with the gold medal in the elite Masters division leaving the other competitors in his wake after scoring a stunning 390 out of a possible 400 on one round. Gordon White scored an impressive debut win in the Freestyle Unlimited-flight 2 division with a very consistent display over the weekend and this win will give White a real confidence boost for future tournaments. Darrell Hudson showed a real liking for the 3D discipline scoring an excellent win in Recurve - B grade with club mate Peter Stubbs grabbing the bronze medal. Exciting youngster, Matthew Wittman handled the step up to Freestyle Unlimited-flight 1 with ease scoring the bronze medal in a crack field of competitors. Denise Stevenson continued her recent run of good form finishing with the silver medal in Womens Freestyle Unlimited – flight 2. Karen Hudson shot particularly well to finish with silver medal in Womens Compound – B grade with Amy Stubbs finishing with the bronze. Ben Stubbs made a welcome return to the tournament scene finishing with the bronze medal in Compound – C grade. Juniors Matthew Jauja and Jarrod Stubbs rounded out the medal haul with Jauja scoring the silver in Freestyle Unlimited and Stubbs the bronze in Compound A grade. Club members are reminded that the next club shoot will be held this Saturday morning with muster at 9.15am.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 2 round ABA event on Sunday with club members taking the final opportunity to prepare for the 2009 Australian Championships to be held at Mildura over the Easter weekend. Competitors took to the Outback range in perfect weather conditions and some excellent scores were recorded. Matt Wittman tuned up for the Nationals putting together two top class rounds to score a narrow 2 point win over John Clark in the Open division with Greg Donovan grabbing third place. Darrell Hudson was in sensational form in the Traditional division scorching round the course to score a comfortable win with Peter Stubbs also shooting well to take second with Michael Patrick in third. James Boxsell was another archer in great form scoring a decisive win in the Junior Open contest with Sebastian Donovan just edging out Cameron Boxsell in a spirited battle for the minor placings. In the Junior Compound division Jarrod Stubbs showed his class to score a good win with Sam Snape taking second place and Sam Zelinski finishing third. The next club shoot will be held on April 26th.

Season Heating Up As Nationals Approach

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow round on Sunday with competitors taking to the Boundary range to compete in perfect weather conditions. Matthew Wittman continues to set a cracking pace in the Open division returning another outstanding round to finish on top after a close battle with John Clark. Stuart Dolbel returned to form with a good performance to edge out Greg Donovan for third place. Darrell Hudson shot brilliantly to take top honours in the Traditional division with Michael Patrick and Peter Stubbs finishing tied for the minor placings. Jarrod Stubbs finished the day as the top Junior Compound shooter scoring a good win with Sam Snape just edging out Sam Zelinski in a spirited contest for the minor placings. The next club shoot will be held on April 4th and will feature a 2 round ABA event. This will be the final opportunity for club members to gain vital practice before the Australian Field Archery Titles to be held in Mildura over the Easter weekend.

NVA Performs Well At First Major Of The Year

Namoi Valley Archers sent a 10 member team to the Northern NSW Branch 3D Titles held on the Central Coast on the weekend returning with 4 gold, 4 silver and a bronze medal. Over 90 competitors braved the extremely hot conditions to contest the two day tournament hosted by the Moonterra club who provided two top class ranges for the event. The ranges located in coastal rainforest provided a real challenge with the range designers making excellent use of the steep terrain.
Wade Hudson finished the weekend as the top compound archers scoring the win in the Masters division with a superb performance across the 2 days of competition. Amy Stubbs caused a huge boil-over in Womens Compound B grade with a brilliant performance to take the gold medal in her first tournament as a senior archer. Stubbs made the transition from the Junior ranks in style relegating highly rated club mate Karen Hudson to second place to give the club a great 1-2 result. Ann Stubbs added to the medal haul showing great determination to grab the silver medal in Womens Compound C grade while outstanding junior compound archer Jarrod Stubbs was in a class of his own scoring a big win in B grade. Darrell Hudson turned in an outstanding two days of archery to score a dominant win in the Recurve event with Peter Stubbs fighting hard to take second place as the club underlined its’ dominance in this style of archery. Denise Stevenson scored the silver medal in Womens Freestyle Unlimited with a typically determined performance while Mark Stevenson continued his recent run of good form taking the bronze medal in Mens Freestyle Unlimited shooting particularly well on the second day.

First Shoot For 2009

Namoi Valley Archers launched the 2009 season on Sunday with 38 archers braving the hot conditions to compete in a 2 arrow 3D round. This round gave club members their only opportunity to prepare for the 2 day 3D tournament to be held at Moonterra on the Central Coast this weekend. Course designers, Greg Donovan and Lloyd Jauja prepared a very challenging 20 target range which provided plenty of tough shots through clever use of terrain and target choice. Jackelyn Patrick found the course to her liking setting a new Cub Girl Compound record on the day. The Open division had a big field with John Clark edging out Stuart Dolbel for top spot in a close contest. Gordon White showed the benefit of some hard work at the practice butts over the off season to grab third spot from some highly rated archers. Wade Hudson turned in an impressive performance to finish the day as the top Compound archer with Karen Hudson shooting well to take second spot with Ken Hill in third after a solid round. Darrell Hudson scored a great win in the Traditional contest with visiting Tamworth archer, Andrew Springall taking second place and Michael Patrick third. James Boxsell returned the highest score of the day with a sensational round on his way to winning Junior Open with Cameron Boxsell filling second p[lace and Sebastian Donovan third. The next club shoot will be held on February 15th with muster at 8.45am.

I Killed Darth Vader

Namoi Valley Archers finished the 2008 season on Sunday with a good field taking to the Outback range for a 3 arrow round. The last shoot of the year traditionally has a fun element and this year Wade Hudson and Ben Stubbs set a new standard with the day having a Star Wars theme. All targets for the day featured characters from the Star Wars movies with the range taking on a whole new look with the unusual targets, ewoks, storm troopers, R2D2 etc. How surreal! As the shoot groups were announced the Star Wars theme music began to play, a brilliant touch which summed up a superb day. Special mention must be made of the outstanding effort of Amy Stubbs who turned complete with Princess Leia hair style. Club members gave the day the big thumbs up with plans already underway to find a fun theme for the final shoot for 2009. Even though the day had a fun feel there was some serious competition on the range. In the Open contest, results from last weeks shoot turned around with John Clark skipping away with the win while Matthew Wittman slipped under the guard of Steve Jaeger and Stuart Dolbel to take second. Jaeger and Dolbel were paired together and had a titanic battle with Jaeger just easing past Dolbel in the concluding stages to finish third. Peter Stubbs finished the year on a high downing close friend and rival, Darrell Hudson in the Traditional division with Michael Patrick finishing third. There were no surprises at the top of the Compound ranks with Wade Hudson finishing a clear winner. The battle for the minor placings was very tight with Ken Hill doing just enough to grab second while Ann Stubbs just pipped Karen Hudson for third. James Boxsell finished the year in spectacular fashion reaching the 1100 point mark for the first time to finish on top in Junior Open with Cameron Boxsell finishing third with Sebastian Donovan third. Sam Snape proved too good in the Junior Compound division with Jarrod Stubbs second and Amy Stubbs in third. The club will be in recess during December and January resuming activities in February, 2009.

Namoi Valley Archers held a three arrow animal round on Sunday with competitors taking to the Outback range in excellent weather conditions. Some excellent scores were returned on the day with Jessica Sinclair setting a new club record with a top class performance in Cub Girl Open. Darrell Hudson set a cracking pace in the Traditional contest recording a comprehensive win with Peter Stubbs grabbing second place from Lloyd Jauja. Wade Hudson was in sensational form in the Compound division scoring a massive win with Karen Hudson taking second place and Ben Stubbs in third. John Clark finished on top in the Open contest with Stuart Dolbel just edging out Greg Donovan in the battle for the minor placings. James Boxsell continued his recent good form to win a keenly contested Junior Open division with Matthew Jauja in second and Cameron Boxsell in third. The next club shoot will be held on November 9th and will be followed by a club meeting.

Delta Round

Namoi Valley Archers held a Delta round on Sunday with a good field enjoying the excellent weather conditions. The Delta round features full colour animal targets with very realistic scoring zones which make high scoring a very difficult challenge. Matt Wittman confirmed his rating as one of the clubs best young archers with a top class performance to win the Open contest. Wittman finished just in front of Steve Jaeger with Stuart Dolbel just edging out his wife Jodi Dolbel in the battle for third place. Darrell Hudson turned in another excellent performance to claim the win in the Traditional contest with Peter Stubbs in second and Michael Patrick third. Wade Hudson turned in a phenomenal round to blitz the field in the Compound division shooting with great precision. Karen Hudson had to battle hard to hold onto second place from the determined Ann Stubbs. The battle for supremacy in Junior Open was first class with Matthew Jauja hanging to record a very narrow win from Cameron Boxsell with James Boxsell finishing a close third. The next club shoot will be the return leg of the Tamworth-Gunnedah Interclub challenge with a two round event to be held on October 26th. This event is always a great day and the Gunnedah club will be looking to retain the Interclub trophy after they recorded a narrow in the first leg held in Tamworth earlier in the year.

NVA Rule At Branch 3D

Namoi Valley Archers sent a team of 16 archers to the Northern NSW Branch 3D Titles held on the Central Coast on the weekend turning in a dominant performance to return with 11 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. The tournament was hosted by the Moonterra club who provided two superb but contrasting ranges with one range featuring thick rainforest complete with a creek running through the middle of the range. The second range offered a different challenge as it climbed up through more open terrain. Competitors shot in fine, hot and humid conditions on Saturday with Sunday offering a dramatically different day with heavily overcast skies and a few light showers. On Sunday competitors shooting in the rainforest sections of the range faced the unusual problem of very low light as they struggled to see some of the targets clearly.
Wade Hudson finished the weekend as the top compound archer turning in another brilliant display to win the Masters division.. Hudson forged a 20 point overnight lead over Newcastle’s Robin Huckett after the first 2 rounds then proceeded to destroy his opposition in the last round to finish the tournament 72 points clear of Huckett with Tuggerah archer, Brian Turner in third. Ben Stubbs grabbed the silver medal in Mens B grade compound while Karen Hudson was in scintillating form finishing with gold medal in Womens B grade compound after a top class final round with Ann Stubbs grabbing the bronze in compound C grade. The club’s recurve archers turned in a great display with Peter Stubbs finished the tournament as the highest scoring recurve archer. Stubbs grabbed the top spot in B grade after a titanic struggle with club mate Darrell Hudson. Hudson forged an impressive lead after the first round but Stubbs came roaring back into contention with a wonderful second round and hung on grimly over the closing stages to secure a great win with Hudson forced to settle for the silver. Michael Patrick showed his liking for the 3D format securing the gold medal in C grade with a very consistent display over the three rounds. John Clark scored a win in Freestyle Unlimited putting together his best ever performance in a 3D event finishing 18 points in front of the Central Coast’s Gary Nicholls. Gordon White competing in his first 3D tournament turned in a wonderful display to finish with the silver medal in Freestyle Unlimited – Fl 2 and will great confidence from this performance. Lloyd Jauja competing in Bowhunter Unlimited finished with the silver medal after a personal best performance. Jauja was right in the mix after the first 2 rounds just 6 points from the lead but Newcastle 3D specialist Barney Miller shut Jauja out after returning a perfect score in the final round.
The club’s junior archers dominated the tournament returning with 6 gold medals. Matthew Jauja shot brilliantly over the weekend to finish as the number one Freestyle Unlimited archer with a top class display of precision archery. Siblings, Amy and Jarrod Stubbs finished the weekend as the top competitors in their respective Junior Compound divisions with typically consistent performances. Christopher Patrick shot particularly well to take the Cub compound B grade title while Jackelyn Patrick won the Cub compound D grade gold medal. Samantha Patrick rounded out the medal haul after winning the Cub recurve event.
The focus returns to club activities this weekend with a club shoot set down for this Sunday.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow animal round on Sunday with competitors taking to the Outback range in perfect weather conditions. Peter Stubbs continued his recent good form to finish the day as the top Traditional archer scoring a hard fought win over Michael Patrick with Lloyd Jauja finishing third. The Mens Open contest was particularly hard fought with John Clark just doing enough to shade Stuart Dolbel with Steve Jaeger finishing third. Wade Hudson delivered another outstanding round to score a comprehensive win in the Compound division with Karen Hudson grabbing second after a close contest with the improving Ann Stubbs. The next club shoot will be held on August 31st.

On Target At Branch IFFA

Namoi Valley Archers was represented by a four member team at the Northern NSW IFAA Championships held in Gloucester over the weekend, with the team having a 100 percent success rate, returning with four gold medals. Competitors enjoyed reasonable weather on Saturday but things turned dramatically on Sunday with extremely cold temperatures and high winds making precision archery very difficult. The IFAA event is a very technical round with competitors required to shoot 4 arrows at 28 targets each day at marked distances ranging from 11 yards to a maximum of 80 yards.
Ann Stubbs scored a memorable victory in Womens Bowhunter Compound holding her composure to edge out Narelle Bailey and Amanda Huckstadt with a fine performance. Ann Stubbs has been making steady improvement in the last couple of months and the weekend victory is just reward for her hard work at the practice butts. Peter Stubbs proved far too good in the Bowhunter Recurve contest putting together two very consistent rounds to take the gold in am impressive performance. Matthew Jauja did just enough to secure the win in Junior Freestyle Unlimited in his first IFAA tournament and showed signs that he will quickly come to grips with this discipline in the future. Amy Stubbs finished the weekend as the top Junior Bowhunter Compound competitor with a typical hard working performance to finish well clear of her nearest opponent. Stubbs goes about her archery with a minimum of fuss and continues to rack up an enviable record in Branch tournaments.
The focus returns to club activities this Sunday with a 3 arrow animal round scheduled at the club’s Wandobah Road facility.

IFAA Animal Round

Namoi Valley Archers held an IFAA animal round on Sunday with competitors shooting in perfect winter weather conditions. Ken Thompson, Karen Hudson and Jess Sinclair all set new club records with Sinclair smashing the old Cub Girl Open mark by 100 points in a very impressive display. The IFAA animal round is a 28 target marked distance round with archers allowed up to 3 shots at each target with the first scoring arrow counted. The talking point of the day was target 10, which due to a target placement mix up had archers shooting at a very small target set at 28 yards. The archers who successfully negotiated this very tough target returned with very broad smiles indeed. The round was scheduled to provide club members attending this weekend’s Branch IFAA Championships in Gloucester with valuable match practice and was followed by a social IFAA Hunter round.
Wade Hudson was in great form returning a very solid round to lead the compound archers home with Karen Hudson shooting brilliantly to grab second place with Ann Stubbs just edging out Keen Hill for third. John Clark had a great day hitting the centre of all 28 targets to return a perfect score in the Open contest. The battle for the minor placings was extremely intense with Steve Jaeger, Stuart Dolbel and Matt Sinclair finishing the day in a triple deadheat. Amy Stubbs finished the day as the top junior compound archer with Jarrod Stubbs in second and Hayden Riordan third. In the Traditional battle Peter Stubbs showed he is right on track for a good performance at the Gloucester tournament scoring a well earned win over fierce rival Darrell Hudson. The next club shoot will be held on August 17th.

Namoi Valley Archers sent a strong team of 17 archers to contest the Northern NSW Branch Indoor Archery Titles held in Tamworth over the weekend returning with an outstanding haul of 10 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The 2 day tournament required competitors to shoot a total of 120 arrows at a distance of 20 yards with each day broken into 3 games of 20 arrows with 5 arrows shot at each end. The tournament attracted a quality field of 73 archers from Newcastle, the Central Coast, Taree, Gloucester, Inverell, Tamworth and Gunnedah. The field featured multiple World and Australian champions with a very high standard of archery on display over the weekend with one competitor shooting 599 out of a possible 600. With fourteen shooting lanes in use for the tournament this meant there was a large gallery watching the action and for many archers this provided a new and sometimes nerve wracking experience shooting under close scrutiny from their fellow competitors as they battled for every point. The quality of the competition was underlined in the Mens Freestyle Unlimited division with the top 3 competitors separated by just 4 points with Newcastle’s Scott Buscombe scoring a narrow win from Scott Dollin of Taree and Adam Tillbrook of Newcastle.
A team event was held as part of the competition with each club entering their top four sighted shooters and their best barebow shooter. Namoi Valley Archers team of Stuart Dolbel, David Buckingham, Matthew Wittman, John Clark and Ann Stubbs finished second behind the powerful team representing the Avon Valley Club from Gloucester.
Namoi Valley Archers showed their dominance in the Bowhunter Unlimited division with Stuart Dolbel showed plenty of tenacity to record a win in A grade with David Buckingham also finishing on top in B grade with a great performance. Peter Stubbs shot consistently to fend off the challenge from Tamworth’s Andrew Springer in Recurve to record a great win while Greg Donovan streeted the field to record the win in Bowhunter Limited. Ann Stubbs continues to improve at a rapid rate posting personal best scores on the weekend to win Womens Compound. Stubbs bettered her score posted at the club practice event only one week ago by a substantial margin outshooting her more fancied opponents. Freestyle Recurve exponent, Ken Thompson, was in superb form scoring a comprehensive win over Reade Moffat who just returned from representing Australia at the World IFAA Championships held in Nambia. Ben Stubbs added to the medal haul with a silver in Mens Bowhunter B grade while Jodi Dolbel battled back from equipment problems late in the last end on Saturday to grab third place in Womens Freestyle Unlimited.
The club’s juniors were in great form with Matthew Wittman finishing the tournament as the highest scoring junior archer after a brilliant performance in Freestyle Unlimited. Amy Stubbs grabbed the gold in Girls Junior Bowhunter division with Shane Thompson battling hard on his way to winning Freestyle Recurve. Sebastian Donovan struggled with equipment problems throughout the weekend but the tenacious Donovan still had enough class to score the win in Bowhunter Limited while Jarrod Stubbs finished third in a hot Boys Bowhunter field.
The focus returns to club activities this weekend with a 3 arrow round set down for the Boundary range on Sunday.

Namoi Valley Archers introduced a first for the club on Sunday staging a 20yd round at the range. Competitors were required to shoot 60 arrows from 20 yards for seniors and juniors with cubs shooting at 10 yards. The round was broken into 3 games of 20 arrows with 5 arrows shot at each end. This is the format which will be used for the Northern NSW Branch Indoor Championships which is to be held on July 12th and 13th at Tamworth and club officials scheduled the round to help club members prepare for the upcoming Indoor tournament. The new concept proved an outstanding success with 22 competitors filling the modified practice range to capacity and judging by the comments of competitors at the end of the event this round looks set to become an annual fixture on the club shoot calendar.
Stuart Dolbel recorded the highest score of the day scoring a convincing win in the sighted division. Dolbel was one point behind Greg Donovan after the first game but really hit his straps over the last two games to score a decisive win. Donovan could not match the pace set by Dolbel over the concluding stages but did just enough to edge out John Clark in the battle for the minor placings. Wade Hudson went head to head with accomplished Newcastle archer, Robin Huckett, who was visiting the club for the day in the barebow division and the two were neck and neck midway through the event but Huckett buckled under the relentless pressure applied by Hudson with his challenge fading away over the last game leaving Hudson a clear winner. Karen Hudson showed plenty of ability in this format to grab third place with an impressive performance. Competitors attending the Northern NSW Branch Indoor Championships in Tamworth this weekend are advised they must be at the venue by 8.30 am to nominate. Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow animal round on Sunday with competitors taking to the Outback range in the perfect winter weather conditions. Darrell Hudson was in top form scoring a good win in a typically spirited Traditional contest with Peter Stubbs shooting well to finish second over Michael Patrick in third. John Clark turned in a solid round to grab top spot in the Open contest from Stuart Dolbel who bounced back to form to edge out Steve Jaeger in a tense battle for the minor placings. Inter Club Challenge, Gunnedah Retain The Trophy

Namoi Valley Archers travelled to the home of Tamworth Field Archers on Sunday with 66 archers taking to the Attunga State Forest ranges in the battle for the Interclub Shield. The Gunnedah club reigned supreme at the end of the day securing the shield with a 148 point win. The competition for the Interclub Shield began last year and has quickly captured the imagination of both clubs with Namoi Valley Archers sending a club record 40 archers to the event. Competition was held over two rounds with a 3 arrow ABA round in the morning and a 1 arrow 3D round completing the event after lunch. The Tamworth club prepared two outstanding ranges for the day with the ABA range located in very steep and rocky terrain while the 3D range offered a completely different challenge in the flatter section of the forest. The format for the event involved adding the score of the highest scoring archer from each club in 5 selected divisions to give an overall result. Tamworth carried the day in the Freestyle Unlimited division with Ben Ireland just shading John Clark with Tamworth also taking the Bowhunter Unlimited contest with Robert Jones securing the win over Matt Sinclair. Namoi Valley Archer’s Christopher Patrick stormed home in the 3D round to win the Cub Compound contest over Jaxson Sollar to edge Gunnedah in front. Darrell Hudson showed great composure to increase Gunnedah’s lead with a superb win over arch rival Bruce Sherwood setting up the victory with a brilliant ABA round. Compound archer, Wade Hudson sealed the win for Gunnedah with another impressive performance scoring the biggest win of the day over veteran Neville White. The day was held in a wonderful social atmosphere and both clubs are looking forward to the second leg of the Interclub Challenge to be held in Gunnedah in October. Northern NSW Branch ABA

Namoi Valley Archers played host to 107 competitors at an official Northern NSW Branch ABA tournament held last weekend. A quality field of archers from Newcastle, the Central Coast, Gloucester, Taree, Maitland, Kempsey and all over the North-West descended on the Wondoba State Recreation area facility to participate in the two day event. Competitors had to deal with difficult conditions on Saturday with strong winds and heavily overcast skies the order of the day Competition began on Saturday morning with the 3 arrow round followed by the high pressure 1 arrow round concluding with a 2 arrow all count round on Sunday morning. Two ranges were used for the tournament each consisting of 20 animal targets set at unknown distances in natural bush settings with distances ranging from 8 to 48 metres. Northern NSW Branch Controller, Peter Fairhall praised the local club for the quality of their ranges designed by Darrell Hudson and Peter Stubbs (Outback range)and Steve Jaeger and Stuart Dolbel (Boundary range).

The competition in the sighted divisions was a very high standard with the Mens Freestyle Unlimited division proving very intense with the top three competitors separated by just 2 points after the first two rounds with Gunnedah’s Steve Jaeger holding the overnight lead. Taree’s Scott Dollin turned in a magnificent last round missing the bullseye with just 3 of his 40 arrows to ease to a very narrow 2 point win over Jaeger with another local, John Clark a further 8 points back in third. Tamworth’s Robert Jones was another archer in top form turning in three high class rounds to claim the win in Mens Bowhunter Unlimited with Gunnedah’s, Stuart Dolbel taking second place. Matt Sinclair made an impressive debut into Branch competition shooting very well to take third leaving some highly credentialed archers in his wake. Scott Porter was an impressive winner in Bowhunter Limited while Ken Thompson continued his good form to win Recurve Freestyle. Jodi Dolbel made a welcome return to competition showing all her international experience to score a comprehensive win in Womens Freestyle Unlimited with a powerful display while Diana Finlay scored a good win in Womens Bowhunter Limited. The local club’s barebow compound archers dominated the tournament with Wade Hudson winning Masters with a superb performance which included a mesmerizing 1 arrow round of 390 out of a possible 400. Phillip Porter won the A grade division with a top class display while James Finlay clawed back a big overnight deficit to win B grade on a countback. The very consistent Karen Hudson added the Womens B grade win to her bulging trophy cabinet to underline the local clubs dominance with Shelly Porter finishing second in D grade. Recurve exponents, Darrell Hudson and Peter Stubbs had to settle for the minor placings behind Tamworth’s Bruce Sherwood in B grade while Michael Patrick picked up the win in C grade. The local club’s younger archers performed very well with Matthew Wittman and Matthew Jauja going head to head in Junior Freestyle Unlimited with Witttman powering away with the win after a brilliant final round while Shane Thompson proved too strong in Recurve Freestyle Limited. Club members Amy Stubbs, Junior Compound B grade, Mitchell Finlay, Cub Compound A grade, Christopher Patrick Cub Compound C grade, Jackelyn Patrick Cub Compound D grade and Sammy Patrick Recurve D grade all recorded good wins with Jarrod Stubbs grabbing third in Junior Compound A grade and Ethan Thompson second in Bowhunter Limited. The Cub Freestyle event was an all Gunnedah affair with Jess Sinclair coming out on top after a very solid performance with Meg Jaeger taking second and Krystal Jauja third.

NVA Dominant At Nationals

Namoi Valley Archers 20 member team has returned from the Australian Field Archery Championships with a swag of medals after a superb performance by the whole team in the two disciplines contested over the Easter weekend. The championships were held at Hervey Bay, Queensland with archers from all states and territories competing in the biggest tournament held in the Southern hemisphere in 2008. The strong showing by the Gunnedah club is a vindication of the excellent preparation, coaching and support offered to club members who are striving to achieve their full potential as archers.
Namoi Valley Archers club members Karen Hudson, Matthew Wittman, Shane Thompson and Christopher Patrick scored double gold after winning their respective divisions in both disciplines, the ABA National Championships and the 3D Championships.
In the ABA National event Namoi Valley Archers finished with 7 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze in a powerful performance. Karen Hudson scored a wonderful victory in Compound C grade setting up the win with a top class third round to power away from her opposition. Ann Stubbs turned in a stunning performance to take the Compound D grade title after a titanic battle. Stubbs held the overnight lead by just two points after the first two rounds but slipped 54 points behind after a tough third round. Undeterred Stubbs turned on an amazing comeback in the final round to snatch an unlikely victory by four points securing a very cherished gold medal. Ken Thompson backed up his win in the IFAA event with a top notch performance to take the Recurve Freestyle Unlimited crown shooting consistently over the four rounds. Wade Hudson took on the very best after being promoted to the elite Masters Compound division and showed why he is considered the best young barebow archer in the land after finishing with the silver medal. Hudson was locked in a three way battle with multiple Australian representatives Ed Hayes and Rhys Aizlewood. Despite a slow start Hudson showed all his mental toughness to match it with his older and more experienced rivals and come away with the silver medal and his reputation greatly enhanced. The club’s recurve exponents, Darrell Hudson - A grade, Peter Stubbs – B grade and Michael Patrick – C grade all scored silver medals with Stubbs shooting superbly just missing top spot in B grade by a heartbreaking 4 points. Cassie Ireland also secured silver with a last round surge in a quality performance over the four rounds. The club’s younger archers shot particularly well with Matthew Wittman shooting brilliantly to take the Freestyle Unlimited title. Wittman has improved dramatically over the last 12 months and thoroughly deserved the gold medal. Shane Thompson turned in an ultra consistent performance to take gold in Recurve Freestyle Limited while Jodi Buckingham also took gold in Bowhunter Limited. Christopher Patrick turned in a very solid performance to take the Cub Compound C grade gold shooting very well in the final two rounds. Amy Stubbs finished with the silver in Junior Compound B grade while Sammy Patrick also took silver in Cub Recurve D grade. Jackelyn Patrick rounded out the medals with a bronze in Cub Compound D grade.
The Australian 3D Championship event was also contested over four rounds with Namoi Valley Archers securing 8 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals to underline the overall strength of the local club. Karen Hudson had to fight all the way to secure her second gold medal taking the Compound C grade gold by just four points after a blistering last round. Peter Stubbs was the toast of the recurve group after a superb performance across the four rounds secured him the B grade title with a score which would have won A grade. Michael Patrick also showed his liking for the 3D targets securing the gold in Recurve C grade while Darrell Hudson finished with the silver in Recurve A grade. Ben Ireland shot superbly to finish with the silver in the ultra competitive Freestyle Unlimited division finishing just 4 points from top spot. Ken Thompson has his colours lowered at the 2008 Nationals for the first time taking the silver after a top class contest with Reade Moffatt. The pair were locked together after 3 rounds but Moffatt did just enough over the final round to secure a very close win. Wade Hudson showed he equally at home in the 3D event scoring his second silver medal with another brilliant performance edging out Ed Hayes over the final stages in another enthralling contest with Cassie Ireland grabbing bronze in the Womens Freestyle Unlimited contest. Matthew Wittman and Shane Thompson continued their golden run at the Nationals winning their respective divisions in fine style. Amy Stubbs turned in a sensational performance to take the Compound B grade gold medal shooting brilliantly over the four rounds. Christopher Patrick added a second gold with a good performance in Compound C grade while Jackelyn Patrick scored a hard earned gold medal in Cub Compound D grade. Sammy Patrick finished with her second silver medal of the championships in Cub Recurve D grade after a typically determined performance.

3 Arrow All Count Leading Up To Two Day Shoot

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3 arrow animal round on Sunday with a big field taking to the Boundary range in perfect weather conditions. Wade Hudson was is top form in the Compound division setting a new club record on his way to a good win with Phillip Porter also shooting well to take second place with Ben Stubbs grabbing third. John Clark finished on top in the Open Division after a consistent round with Steve Jaeger finishing second. Stuart Dolbel had to work hard to hold off the rapidly improving Matt Sinclair for third. Amy Stubbs scored a hard fought win in the Junior compound contest from Shane Thompson with Hayden Riordan in third. Matt Jauja is starting to show the benefits of hard work at the practice butts returning a top class score in Junior Open. Cameron Boxsell finished second after a personal best score with Sebastian Donovan in third. New 3D Targets & Range Layout

Namoi Valley Archers held the first 3D event of the season on Sunday with the biggest field of the year on hand to compete in perfect weather conditions. Sunday’s two round event was the first opportunity for club members to try the club’s recently upgraded selection of 3D targets and range designers Lloyd Jauja and Greg Donovan added to the challenge with a completely redesigned 3D range. The new range proved a big hit providing challenging shots while still giving archers the security of safe backdrops for any overshot arrows.
The new range proved no barrier to good scoring with six club records set on the day with Ken Thompson, Amy Stubbs, Shane Thompson, Jackelyn Patrick, Katie Taylor and Jessica Sinclair all setting new records in their respective divisions.
Steve Jaeger showed all his international experience with a brilliant first round to set up the win in the Open Division with John Clark taking second and Stuart Dolbel grabbing third after holding off a determined challenge from Lloyd Jauja and Matt Sinclair. Ben Stubbs scored a narrow win in the Compound division just edging out Ken Hill with Karen Hudson in third. Greg Donovan was in top form in the Bowhunter contest with Scott Porter shooting well to take second with Cameron Hill third. The Traditional contest was a typically hard fought affair with Michael Patrick coming out on top after first round leader Darrell Hudson struggled through the second round with Peter Stubbs third. Amy Stubbs showed her liking for 3D scoring a big win in Junior Compound in a superb performance with Jarrod Stubbs and Hayden Riordan filling the minor placings. The Junior Open contest was very keenly contested with Sebastian Donovan grabbing the win from Matthew Jauja with Cameron Boxsell turning a top class second round to finish third.
The next club shoot will be held this Sunday with a two round ABA event scheduled. This will be the last opportunity for club members to gain valuable practice before the Australian Championships to be held in Hervey Bay, Queensland over the Easter weekend.

Tamworth Invitational Shoot A Huge Success

Namoi Valley Archers turned in a powerful performance at the Tamworth Invitational ABA tournament returning with 11 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze medals. The tournament drew 115 competitors from as far afield as the Central Coast, Newcastle, Taree and Gloucester. The competition was held in perfect weather conditions with the program featuring a two round ABA event on the Saturday concluding with a two arrow round on Sunday.
Wade Hudson was in a class of his own winning the Masters compound division and leading the local charge in the barebow ranks returning the highest barebow score of the weekend. Phillip Porter powered home to take the A grade compound division with a brilliant final round. Karen Hudson was the leading female compound competitor at the tournament after scoring a very hard fought win in C grade with Shelley Porter taking the silver in D grade. Ken Hill and Ann Stubbs adding to the medal haul with bronze medals in their respective divisions. Darrell Hudson was in unstoppable form in A grade Recurve turning in a superb final round to score a decisive win. Peter Stubbs celebrated his promotion to B grade finishing with the silver medal after a tense battle with Tamworth’s Bruce Sherwood.
The club’s sighted shooters also dominated the competition with Ben Ireland, John Clark and Steve Jaeger taking a clean sweep in Freestyle Unlimited. Greg Donovan shook off an indifferent first round to power away for a big win in Mens Bowhunter Limited (flight 1) with Scott Porter taking the Mens Bowhunter Limited (flight 2) division after making a miraculous recovery from a major bow failure during the second round. Porter turned in a sensational final round with a borrowed bow to score a most remarkable win with Jillian Porter finishing with gold in Women’s Bowhunter Limited. Tamworth’s Robert Jones was in untouchable form in Mens Bowhuner Unlimited with Gunnedah’s Stuart Dolbel and Lloyd Jauja going toe to toe in a tense battle for the minor placings with Dolbel calling on all his experience to finish ahead of the rapidly improving Jauja. Cassie Ireland finished with silver medal in the Women’s Bowhunter Unlimited contest.
The club’s junior archers were also well represented in the medal count with Matthew Wittman scoring an impressive win in his first ever tournament in Junior Freestyle Unlimited with Matthew Jauja taking second place with an encouraging performance in the Junior ranks. Siblings, Amy (B grade) and Jarrod Stubbs (A grade) finished with the silver medals in their respective Junior Compound divisions to add to the medal haul. Sebastian Donovan turned in another high class performance to score a runaway win in Cub Boys Freestyle Limited with Meg Jaeger and Sophie Donovan scoring a 1-2 win Cub Girls Freestyle Limited to round off a great performance by the club’s younger archers.
The next club shoot will be a 3D event to be held on March 9th with registration closing at 8.40 for a 9.00 start on the range.

Boundry Range 3 Arrow

Namoi Valley Archers held a three arrow animal round on Sunday with a good field competing in blustery conditions. Competitors used this event to fine tune their form for the Tamworth Invitational ABA Tournament which is scheduled for this weekend with a big contingent from the club planning to compete (pre nom to scorennswaba@hotmail.com).

Wade Hudson scored an excellent win in the Compound event in his first outing with his new bow. Phillip Porter also shot particularly well to take second place with Karen Hudson proving too strong in the concluding stages to edge out Ken Hill for third place.

John Clark held off a very strong challenge from Stuart Dolbel to record a very narrow win in the Open Division with the improving Lloyd Jauja shooting well to take third place. Dolbel’s round was most impressive as early equipment problems meant he had to switch to a back up bow at very short notice.

The ultra consistent Greg Donovan continues to set a cracking pace in the Bowhunter division with another top class round. Scott Porter made a welcome return to the range to take second place with Cameron Hill third.

Darrell Hudson showed he will be hard to beat at Tamworth next weekend putting together a great round to score a convincing win in the Traditional contest with Peter Stubbs also shooting well to take second place with Michael Patrick in third.

The next club shoot will be held on March 9th and will be a two round 3D event. The club has recently upgraded their range of 3D targets and this will be the first opportunity for club members to try them out.

Namoi Valley Archers kicked off the season in fine style on Sunday with a big field taking to the completely rebuilt Outback range under overcast skies. Range designers, Darrell Hudson and Peter Stubbs, brought a fresh new look to the range which proved a real test for all competitors. Ken Thompson, who has worked hard on his form in the off season set a new club record on the day with a very impressive round. The battle for honours in the Open division went right down to the wire with Ben Ireland finishing the day on top just failing to match his own club record in a brilliant display of archery. John Clark pushed Ireland all the way but had to settle for second place with Steve Jaeger grabbing third. Wade Hudson scored a comfortable win in the Compound division with Phillip Porter taking second place with Karen Hudson shooting well to take third. Darrell Hudson won a hotly contested Traditional division with Michael Patrick shooting well to take second place with Peter Stubbs third. Matthew Jauja turned in a superb performance to score a big win in Junior Open and looks set for a big year. Cameron Boxsell shot well to take second place with James Boxsell in third. Amy Stubbs started the year in great form finishing the day as the top archer in Junior Compound with Keegan Patrick just easing past Jarrod Stubbs to take second place in a very even Junior Compound division. Sebastian Donovan was another archer in very good form setting a cracking pace in Cub Open with Jess Sinclair holding off Meg Jaeger in the battle for the minor placings. The next club shoot will be held on February 17th and this will be the final shoot before the Tamworth ABA tournament to be held on February 23rd and 24th.

2007 Wrapped Up

Namoi Valley Archers wrapped a hugely successful 2007 season on Sunday with a twenty target Rabbit Run shoot in the morning followed by the AGM and Presentation of trophies in Sunday evening. The Rabbit Run novelty event proved very popular with the Group One Rabbit target face normally shot at only 7 metres placed on all twenty targets with the longest shot of the day at 48 metres.

The 2007 season results show Namoi Valley Archers club members performed with distinction at National, State and regional level making the club one of the current powerhouses in Australian Field Archery. The club’s performance at the Australian Field Archery Titles held in Wagga Wagga in April resulted in an unprecedented haul of 16 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze medals with seven club members scoring gold in both the ABA and 3D events. At the NSW State Titles held on the Central Coast over the October long weekend the club again dominated to score a total of 16 gold, 12 silver and 4 bronze medals in the ABA and 3D disciplines. On the local scene the club won both legs of the inaugural Interclub Challenge with the Tamworth club and this rivalry looks set to become one of the most keenly contested events on the club calendar with the Tamworth club’s rapidly improving strength sure to test the Gunnedah club in 2008.

Stuart Dolbel was awarded the prestigious Club Person of the Year trophy for his outstanding efforts in 2007. Dolbel in his role as Range Captain provided club members with quality ranges all year and his imaginative range designs provided a great challenge for archers of all abilities. Dolbel was also heavily involved in club administration in his roles as club treasurer and score recorder as well as providing the club with a first class internet site.

Greg Donovan added his name to the elite group of bowhunters winning the Bowhunter of the Year trophy for the first time. Donovan also win the trophy for best pig while Lloyd Jauja picked up the awards for best goat, hare and fox underling his ability in the field.

Matthew Whitman was awarded the Handicap Shield which goes to the most improved archer of the year. Whitman has worked very hard on his archery in 2007 and has benefited enormously from the help of the club coaches developing into a top class competitor and looks set for a great 2008 season.

Namoi Valley Archers has thrived in 2007 offering members a varied shoot program with plenty of competition through the various divisions and a very enjoyable social atmosphere. To reflect the fun side of the club’s activities the inaugural Party Animal of the Year shield was awarded to Ann Stubbs and Steve Jaeger for the efforts in 2007. Namoi Valley Archers will be resuming activities in February with a big year planned for 2008.

Namoi Valley Archers held a 3D event on Sunday with a good field competing in perfect conditions. Range Captain, Stuart Dolbel, combined clever target selection with excellent use of the natural terrain to set a very challenging course for the two arrow round. Wade Hudson proved too good in Mens Compound returning a top class round with Phillip Porter taking second place with James Finlay in third. John Clark won the Mens Open division returning a consistent round with Stuart Dolbel in second and Steve Jaeger grabbing third from a fast finishing Matt Sinclair. Mitchell Finlay turned in a blazing round to score a big win in Cub Boys Compound with Brody Waterford just holding off Hayden Riordan in a tense battle for the minor placings. Sebastian Donovan was another archer in hot from as he scored a great win in Cub boys Open with Cameron Boxsell and Matthew Jauja filling the minor placings. The next club shoot is set down for November 25th with a three arrow round on the program.

Namoi Valley Archers held a two round ABA event on Sunday with competitors taking the opportunity to prepare for the Tamworth ABA Invitation tournament to be held this weekend. A good field took to the Outback range with competitors battling very warm conditions which eventually turned to light rain showers at the conclusion of the second round. Ken Thompson and Sebastian Donovan both set new club records for their respective divisions on the day.
John Clark led the Male Sighted shooters home putting together two solid rounds with Stuart Dolbel finishing strongly to take second place with Greg Donovan also shooting well to take third. Phillip Porter was the standout in the Male Barebow ranks with an outstanding performance. Ken Hill put together two very tidy rounds to finish in second place just edging out Darrell Hudson by four points. Karen Hudson was a runaway winner in Female Barebow with Ann Stubbs in second and Shelley Porter in third. Matthew Whitman continued his recent good form shooting with great consistency to finish on top in Junior Boy Sighted with Shane Thompson grabbing second place with a polished performance with Josh Dolbel in third. Sebastian Donovan was in brilliant form in Cub Boy Sighted scoring a big win from Jackson Howes with Matthew Jauja in third. The next club shoot will be held on November 11th with club members reminded that shoots now earlier with muster at 9.00am.

Delta Round Tests Archers

Namoi Valley Archers kicked off the new pointscore season on Sunday with a 20 target Delta round. The full colour Delta animal targets always provide a challenge with the smaller score zones making high scores hard to come by. Range Captain, Stuart Dolbel added an extra degree of difficulty with a clever mixture of target selection on the Boundary range. Darrell Hudson, Jodi Dolbel, Amy Stubbs and Jessica Sinclair all showed they were up to the challenge setting new club records in their respective divisions.
Darrell Hudson was in brilliant form in the Traditional contest scoring a very impressive win with Michael Patrick also in good form shooting well to take second place with Peter Stubbs in third. John Clark continued his recent good run to take out the Mens Open Division from Stuart Dolbel with a fast finishing Lloyd Jauja grabbing third with an impressive display. Greg Donovan was in unstoppable form in Bowhunter Limited scoring a big win with Cameron Hill and Ben Stubbs filling the minor placings. Sebastian Donovan won a keenly contested Cub Open division from Matthew Jauja and Jackson Howes.
The next club shoot to be held on October 28th will be a two round ABA event with a sausage sizzle lunch. This event will give valuable practice for the Branch ABA Invitation tournament to be held at Tamworth on November 3rd and 4th.

NVA Invitational

Namoi Valley Archers hosted a highly successful Northern NSW Branch ABA Invitation tournament over the weekend with archers from Newcastle, Maitland, the Central Coast, Taree, Gloucester, and all over the North-West and New England competing. The two day tournament was held under clear blue skies with Branch officials and competitors enthusiastic in their praise of the club facilities and ranges. Range captain Stuart Dolbel delivered two high quality ranges for the weekend which offered a real challenge to all archers competing.
The tournament was conducted over three rounds with the Saturday program featuring a three arrow round in the morning and the high pressure one arrow round in the afternoon. The event concluded on Sunday with a two arrow round. Each round featured twenty hand-drawn animal targets set at unknown distances ranging from 7 metres to 48 metres in natural bush settings.

The battle for the Mens Freestyle Unlimited crown was an absolute nail-biter with the top three competitors separated by just 6 points. Ben Ireland won the event after turning a 6 point overnight deficit into a narrow 4 point winning margin compiling a brilliant round on Sunday morning to edge past overnight leader, Steve Jaeger. Jaeger held on to second place by just 2 points from Newcastle archer, Adam Tilbrook in one of the closest contests seen at the club in many years. Namoi Valley Archer’s reputation as the best in the Branch was underlined as the club swept to victory in all the sighted divisions with Jodi Dolbel (Womens Freestyle Unlimited), Stuart Dolbel (Mens Bowhunter Unlimited), Greg Donovan (Mens Bowhunter Limited), Cassie Ireland (Womens Bowhunter Unlimited), Diana Finlay (Womens Bowhunter Limited) and Ken Thompson (Recurve Freestyle Limited) all won their respective divisions.

The local club also showed the way in the barebow divisions with Wade Hudson having a massive weekend scoring a stunning win in Mens Masters Compound. At just 17 years of age Hudson received the news before the start of competition that he had been promoted to the elite Masters division following his outstanding form at the 2007 Australian Titles where he won both the ABA and 3D A grade crowns. The weekend just got bigger for Hudson with the Branch officials confirming he will be awarded Grand Master Bowmen status after he shot over 700 points on the first day of his last three consecutive tournaments. The title of Grand Master is extremely difficult to achieve but the talented Hudson has achieved it in just his first year as a senior archer. Phillip Porter added to the local charge winning Mens Compound A grade, Darrell Hudson won a very keenly contested Mens Recurve battle with arch rival Bruce Sherwood from Tamworth and Karen Hudson won Womens Compound C grade with an impressive performance.

The club’s talented group of junior archers were also prominent with Matthew Jauja winning a tense Cub Freestyle contest with teammate Sebastian Donovan while Josh Dolbel was too good for the members of the Hunter Academy of Sport in Junior Freestyle Unlimited. Amy Stubbs won the Junior Girls C grade Compound event and Mitchell Finlay was extremely impressive as he stormed to victory in Cub Compound A grade in his very first tournament.

3 Arrow All Count

A cold windy day didn't stop a good turn out at the Wondobah Range for a quick 3 Arrow all count round this Sunday. Thirty Eight shooters took to the Outback range to check out some of the recent changes made in preparation for the two day invitational shoot being held next weekend. Good feed back on the range included comments like "tell me just how far target 13 reallt is" and "surely we aren't expected to shoot between those trees".

There is also some "nice" changes to the Boundry range but they will remain a surprise until the two day shoot.

The biggest competition for the day was the battle for Mens compount with Wade and Phillip both finishing on the same score after 60 arrows.

A cold morning gave way to an almost perfect winters day for a 20 target ABA 3D shoot at the Wondobah Range.

Steve Jaeger won the mens open convincingly with a blistering first round creating a large enought buffer to see him easily take out the day.

A number of club records were set on the day and special mention should be made to:
Hayden Riordan, Jessica Sinclair, Amy Stubbs, Janice Jaeger, Karen Hudson, and Ann Stubbs who all shot records in the their divisions.

Charlie Howard from Dubbo rode his bike 3 hours to make the shoot, on a frosty morning that's definately dedication. It was also good to see a few new faces, with everyone enjoying themselves.

Mid Winters 3 Arrow

Twenty six archers braved the elements after a cold week to take in a three arrow all count round on the Wondobah Range on Sunday. The wind and rain stayed away but it was definately not t-shirt weather.

Steve Jaeger found some form after a being on the sidelines for while with a back injury to take out the mens open in a convincing manner.
The Mens Traditional division, although down a key competitor was a close battle with Peter Subbs just edging out Darrell Hudson in a high scoring round.

The next major shoot it the Branch Indoor at Tamworth next weekend, see you there.

Tamworth Field Archers V’s Namoi Valley Archers

Tamworth and Gunnedah went head to head in the first of what is sure to develop into a hotly contested inter club challenge event in the future. TFA designed a challenging ABA course for the mornings 3 arrow ABA round and then laid on a great 3D range for the one arrow round after a scrumptious BBQ lunch.

Ben Ireland found some serious form (after yet another release aid purchase and some fine tuning) to come in with first round honors with a smoking hot 398 in the mens open division. Ben eventually took out the day after a 388 in the 3D but John Clark wasn't too far behind, John obviously took a liking to the Tamworth layout and showed he's still a hot contester in the ABA style of archery.

The teams event, which consisted of a sighted and unsighted junior and senoir from each club was a one sided event with Gunnedah trouncing TFA convincingly to take home the trophy for the first time.

Thanks have to go to John Clark and Jason Smith of TFA who have taken this event from a simple concept discussed after a two day shoot in November last year to making it happen, without the likes of Jason and John archery wouldn't be enjoying the revival it is of late, thanks again from everyone.

ABA On The Boundy Range

Thirty Five archers took to the Boundry Range in what could only be described as the perfect Autumn day for archery. The wind wasn't strong enough to make it through the forest and the previous days rain had the soil soft underfoot. Two rounds were shot across the one range and after 40 arrows Mens Open came in with the top three placegetters all with the same score.

Wade Hudson was in awsome form, I asked him at lunch how he shot the first round, "Wade howd you shoot the first round"..............Wade's only reply with a mouthfull of greasy BBQ sausage was a muffled "Awsome", if his first round was awsome than I don't know how to describe his second round which beat his first round by over 10 points, a 388 from a barebow compound shooter off the red peg is a score to be very proud of and something only a handful of archers have witnessed. Wade destroyed the old club record on the day and set a benchmark only a few will ever have a chance of beating.

Amy Stubbs also smashed the club record for her division in a blistering performance. Amy has been improving greatly over the last few months and will undoubtedly be a great compound archer as she gains more experience.

The next shoot to look out for is the invitational at Tuggerah this weekend and then after that the Inter Club Challenge between Tamworth Field Archers and Namoi Valley Archers on the 13th of May.

Following that there is a club IFAA shoot penciled in for the 27th of May leading up to the Australasian Championships at Sale June long weekend.

Delta Targets

A small group of local archers enjoyed the tough and challenging Delta targets on the Outback range on Sunday. Delta targets are basically coloured photo type animal paper targets with score zones in the exact spot and size as the vitals on that particular animal. This means that a score zone for a 48mtr target could be the size of a tea cup, not exactly an easy target to hit.

A number of club records were broken on the day, maybe the new look before you shoot bino rule helped for these targets or maybe the quality of the field is just stepping up to the challenge. These targets are unforgiving, a number of them only allowing a "C" score for a 1" deviation from the "A" zone and some offering a miss for anything greater than that 1" deviation.

Steve Jaeger shot exceptionaly after a week of tuning his bow after some tips at the Nationals, closley followed by John Clark, Mr "Play it safe" and go for consistency.

ABA National Titles Wrap Up

Namoi Valley Archers reputation as one of the most successful clubs in Australia was enhanced after an outstanding performance by the twenty two member team who attended the 2007 Australian Field Archery Championships held in Wagga Wagga over the Easter weekend. Two disciplines were contested over the four day tournament with over 350 competitors participating in the ABA National round which was held over four rounds and 280 competitors participating in the Australian 3D round which was also held over four rounds making this tournament the largest gathering of archers in the Southern Hemisphere in 2007.
Namoi Valley Archers returned with 8 gold and 4 bronze medals in the ABA National round and 8 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals in the Australian 3D round. Seven local archers finished the tournament with gold in both disciplines, the ‘magnificent seven’ include senior archers Wade Hudson and Greg Donovan, juniors Josh Dolbel, Cameron Hill and Katie Patrick, cubs Sebastian Donovan and Christopher Patrick.

Namoi Valley Archer’s status as the top club in Northern NSW was underlined with Wade Hudson, Ken Hill and Stuart Dolbel, being selected in the winning Northern NSW Branch ABA team, and Wade Hudson, Steve Jaeger and Jodi Dolbel being selected in the winning Northern NSW Branch 3D team.

Competitors at the Australian Championships rated the ranges used for the tournament among the most difficult and highly technical they had encountered with designers making every shot a real test of the archers mental and physical ability with competitors who competed in both events faced the exhausting task of shooting two rounds of ABA and one round of 3D on both the second and third day of the tournament.

ABA National Round
Wade Hudson scored a stunning win in the Compound A grade division winning his first Australian title as a senior archer with an incredible 130 point winning margin. Hudson was 2 points behind the leader after the first round then unleashed an incredible second round to leave the field floundering in his wake. Hudson built on his lead over the final two rounds to become the first senior barebow archer from the club to win the national A grade crown. With this win Hudson has stamped himself as one of the elite barebow compound archers in the country, a remarkable achievement for an archer still only 17 years of age. Greg Donovan scored his first Australian title in Bowhunter Limited producing a top class performance to grab the gold showing outstanding mental toughness in his first outing at a major tournament. The unassuming Donovan only took delivery of a new bow ten days before the tournament but quickly adapted to the new equipment and based on this performance has taken his archery to a new level. Michael Patrick called on all his experience to win the Recurve C grade crown turning a overnight deficit into a very narrow 8 point win in a gritty battle over the final two rounds.

Jodi Dolbel finished with the bronze in Ladies Freestyle Unlimited after a very tense battle. Dolbel was with leaders over the first three rounds with the top two only pulling away on the final round.

The club’s outstanding group of young archers turned in a superb performance to claim a swag of medals. Josh Dolbel led the way with a brilliant performance to win Junior Freestyle Unlimited shooting with incredible consistency to hold of a strong challenge from members of the Hunter Academy of Sport to grab a very well deserved win.

Cameron Hill showed his liking for the big stage scoring an impressive win in Junior Bowhunter Limited with a very consistent performance. Katie Patrick was never headed on her way to winning the gold medal in Junior Girls Recurve D grade while Amy Stubbs collected her first Austraslian medal with bronze in Junior Girls Compound C grade with an encouraging performance. Sebastian Donovan simply blew the opposition away scoring a massive win in Cub Boys Freestyle Limited. Donovan would have still won the title by a good margin even if he didn’t contest the last round such was his dominance. Christopher Patrick added to the gold rush with a good win in Cub Boy Compound C grade with Meg Jaeger, Cub Girl Freestyle Limited and Sammy Patrick, Cub Girl Recurve D grade also winning bronze medals.

The Australian 3D Round

Wade Hudson scored his second gold medal for the tournament with a hard fought win in Compound A grade. Hudson held the lead after the first round only to slip behind after round two but a fine third round had Hudson back in the lead. Showing maturity beyond his years Hudson then shut the gate on his opponents with the best barebow round of the competition to storm to a brilliant victory. Hudson has made the difficult look easy making an effortless transition from the Junior ranks to the Senior ranks and left many seasoned competitors stunned with his performance these Australian Championships. Greg Donovan also scored his second National Title with another very consistent performance across the four rounds in Bowhunter Limited. Amazingly Donovan scored three rounds of 370 and one round of 362 to leave the field in his wake with a superb performance.

Jodi Dolbel showed fantastic mental toughness to score a very hard fought win in Ladies Freestyle Unlimited. Dolbel had to fight off a very strong last round challenge fro 3D specialist, Linda Wagner to claim a very cherished Australian Title in a memorable performance. Darrell Hudson was another archer who toughed it out over the final two rounds to grab a bronze medal in Recurve B grade while Michael Patrick grabbed silver in Recurve C grade. Ken Hill turned in the performance of his life to grab the bronze medal in the always competitive B grade Compound division with a very consistent showing across the four rounds in a wonderful result on the national stage.
Josh Dolbel blitzed the opposition to grab his second gold for the weekend in Junior Freestyle Unlimited with his trademark consistency while Cameron Hill also achieved the double winning Junior Bowhunter Limited with a top class performance. Katie Patrick finished with her second gold in Junior Recurve D grade as did younger brother Christopher in Cub Compound C grade. Amy Stubbs shot extremely well to finish with a bronze in Junior Compound C grade. Sebastian Donovan was unstoppable as he stormed his second gold in Cub Freestyle Limited in another high class exhibition of archery with Jackelyen Patrick grabbing a silver in Cub Girls Compound D grade with a determined showing. Sammy Patrick won the silver in Cub D grade Recurve and Meg Jaeger the bronze in Cub Girl Freestyle Limited. Special mention must be made of the performance of Steve Jaeger who has only made the switch to the ultra competitive Freestyle Unlimited ranks. Jjaeger shot extremely well to finish sixth in the ABA event and fourth in the 3D event and as he gains more experience in this division he will become a major contender at future National tournaments.

ABA, Before Nationals

A small group of local archers took to the Wondobah Range to get some last minute practice in before the Nationals at Wagga this weekend. The Boundry Range was chosen for an ABA paper target round and proved favourable for a couple of the locals.

Greg Donovan shooting his new Prestige was in blistering form in the first round shooting a 388 before lunch, Greg's second round let him down leaving him just short of the club record.

Karen Hudson was another in great form smashing the old barebow club record for ladies.

Ben Ireland came up with a convincing win in the open division and should help him gain confidence and form for the Nationals.

Namoi Valley Archers will be sending a strong team of shooters to the Nationals this year and will also help represent Branch E in the hotly contested branch team event.

Father and sone team Darryl and Wade Hudson also won their respective divisions putting them in good form for what is usually a very hotly contested division at the nationals.

3D Range Makes For Good Competition

A large field (42) of local archers took to the modified 3D range to get one last practice at the ABA style 3D before the Nationals at Wagga this easter. Mens open was hotly contested with the half way scores meaning little to the final outcome.
There were a number of records broken on the day, Sebastian Donovan continued his dominance in the Cub Open division and smashed the old club record along the way to an easy win.
Another outstanding cub was Meg Jaeger, shooting her new bow Meg put the head down to fight off fatigue in the second round to come home with a huge win and a new club record that will take plenty to beat.
Ladies barebow compound was also another record breaking division, the shrill cryies of joy arising from Karen Hudson's group could be heard across the entire range, either she had beated Darryl or she was hitting the odd foam animal, well she hit plenty of foam and came in with a new club record for her efforts too.

There is an ABA shoot scheduled in for this Sunday, one last chance to practice before the Nationals on the 6th.

Northern Region Invitational, Locals Clean Up

Namoi Valley Archers hosted a very successful Northern NSW Branch ABA Invitational tournament on the weekend with competitors from the Central Coast, Newcastle, Kempsey, Taree, Maitland, Gloucester, Dubbo, Inverell, Armidale and Tamworth. Tournament organizers had to cope with a rush of late entries with 110 competitors registering for event which was conducted over three rounds. Included in the high class field were multiple Australian champions and several World champions as well as a strong junior contingent from the Hunter Academy of Sport archery program.

Overcast conditions greeted competitors for the start of the Saturday morning three arrow round but the skies cleared by lunchtime with the remainder of the event conducted under brilliant blue skies. The newly redesigned ranges used for the tournament received great praise from archers and administrators with Northern NSW Branch Controller, Jeff Jennings, acknowledging the role of club range captain Stuart Dolbel. Jennings also praised the local club for their ability to deliver a top class tournament making special mention of the catering team led by Margaret Heagney.

The contest in Mens Freestyle Unlimited division provided plenty of high class action as expected with Steve Jaeger winning in his first tournament in this division. Jaeger, a World Champion 3D champion in the Freestyle Limited division, has made the move into the Unlimited ranks for 2007 and shot extremely well to relegate the current Australian ABA Champion Ben Ireland into second place. Jaeger and Ireland were neck and neck after the first round but Ireland uncharacteristically missed a target in the high pressure one arrow round to give Jaeger the advantage which he held to the finish. Maitland’s Adam Tillbrook came in third. Jodi Dolbel made it a double for the club winning the Womens Freestyle Unlimited division with a polished performance. The local club’s strength in the sighted divisions was underlined with Stuart Dolbel shooting brilliantly to win Bowhunter Unlimted in a canter with the club taking the trifecta in Bowhunter Limited with Greg Donovan, Scott Porter and Neil Morris shutting out the opposition.

The club’s barebow archers were also right in the thick of the action with Ken Thompson winning the Masters compound division and Wade Hudson turning in a fine exhibition of archery to take the A grade compound event. Karen Hudson won the D grade Womens division and based on her recent performances looks set to move up the grades in the near future. Darrell Hudson scored a very sweet win over arch rival Bruce Sherwood of Tamworth in Mens Recurve B grade with Peter Stubbs grabbing third while Michael Patrick also shot well to take first place in Recurve C grade.

The club’s younger archers also performed well with Josh Dolbel winning Junior Boys Freestyle Unlimited, Keegan Patrick winning Juniors Boys Compound B grade and Amy Stubbs Junior Girls Compound C grade. In the Cub divisions Jarrod Stubbs won Boys Compound A grade and Christopher Patrick C grade and Krystal Jauja D grade. Sammy Patrick added to the medal haul with a win in Recurve D grade. The club dominated the Cub sighted divisions with Sebastian Donovan, Matthew Jauja, Shane Thompson, Dan Morris and Meg Jaeger all winning their respective divisions.

The novelty events were also keenly contested with Kim Jauja winning the Ladies Axe throwing, , Ken Thompson the Mens Axe throwing. Stuart Dolbel won the Knife throwing. Shane Thompson won the Junior Axe event. A new addition this year was the moving target with Peter Stubbs winning the adult section and Jarrod Stubbs the cub section.

3 Arrow Tests Revamped Boundry Range

Namoi Valley Archers conducted a three arrow animal round on Sunday with a good field on hand to compete in very warm conditions. Range captain, Stuart Dolbel, had plenty of surprises for competitors as they shot the redesigned Boundary range for the first time. Target 18 was the talking point among competitors after several archers came to grief on this extremely intimidating and difficult shot. Wade Hudson finished on top in Mens Compound after compiling an impressive round but Ken Thompson continues to hound Hudson and this intriguing contest will be one to watch during the year. Phillip Porter shot consistently to grab third spot from Ken Hill. Darrell Hudson proved far too good in the Traditional division with Michael Patrick shooting well to take second place with Peter Stubbs in third. Josh Dolbel was in devastating form in the Junior Open contest scoring a big win with Cameron Hill in second and Jamie Thompson third. The Cub Boy Open division provided some very close competiton with Shane Thompson shooting brilliantly to score a good win from Sebastian Donovan with Matthew Jauja also shooting well to take third.
The club will be holding a working bee on March 3rd commencing at 9’30 am to prepare for the upcoming two day tournament. The next club shoot will be a two round ABA event to be held on March 4th.

New Year / New Range

Namoi Valley Archers kicked off the 2007 season with a big field in attendance for a three arrow animal round on the completely redesigned Outback range. New range captain, Stuart Dolbel, presented archers with a challenging course that makes outstanding use of the elevated terrain with the assembled archers praising the new layout. The hot weather added to the challenge but the earlier start time meant the round was finished before the worst of the conditions. Ben Ireland showed he is ready for a big year taking out the Open division after returning a high class round. Steve Jaeger who has moved into the Freestyle Unlimited ranks showed great form with his new bow pushing Ireland all the way to take second and based on this display he will be a major force in 2007. John Clark just edged out Stuart Dolbel in a tight battle for third place. Wade Hudson scored a very narrow ten point win in Mens Compound after a tense contest with Ken Thompson with Ben Stubbs in third place. The Traditional contest was a lively affair with Darrell Hudson coming out on top from the improving Peter Stubbs with Michael Patrick in third place. Jodi Dolbel was in sensational form in Womens Open scoring a good win from Cassie Ireland in second and Janice Jaeger in third. The Cub Boy Compound division was won by Jarrod Stubbs who returned an excellent round with the improving Brody Waterford in second and Christopher Patrick third. The next club shoot will be held on February 18th with all archers reminded that muster is at 8.45am sharp.

Retiring Range Captain, Steve Jaeger, combined with the always sadistic Ben Ireland to hang out what was one mean range on Sunday.
A combination of groug 1,2 & 3 only, ABA tagets were used, this meant the occasional 35mtr rabbit, 48mtr group 3 (or 2) deer, a few 20mtr rabbits, you get the picture, all laid out on the Outback Range just to make it a little more difficult. There were no record scores but everyone had a "great" time.

Later that night the club held it's annual AGM and presentation night, but that's another story (pictorial).

Thirty brave archers hit the boundry range for a three arrow all count round this Sunday, seering temperatures fixed any ambition to beat club or personal records with a number of archers failing to complete the round altogether. Temperatures hit 38 in the shade by the end of the shoot. Wade Hudson was the standout on the day shooting a barebow score most sighted shooters are happy shooting.

Twenty six keen archers took to the range to test their skills against the flies, heat and wind as much as the targets on Sunday. Ben Ireland, dispite rumours he had "strained a muscle" on his honey moon last week shot well closing in on the club record in the last few targets before a dissapointing shot put the record out of reach.
Shane Thompson elected to shoot cub open for a change, putting his Olympic Recurve down for a day, Shane was in blistering form smashing the old club record, set on IFAA targets, by more than just a few measly points.
NVA would also like to welcome the few newcomers to the club and hope they continue to make the treck to club shoots in the future.

The round was a simple three arrow all count, 20 - 15 - 10 (Kill, Wound, Hit) and ABA tagets.

3 Arrow All Count On IFAA Hunter Faces

Steve Jaeger kept the field guessing when he layed out IFAA Hunter target faces on the ABA Boundry Range this weekend. The target configuration is being accepted by the local archery as a way of encouraging all shooters to compete in unmarked distance shooting. The Hunter faces have a much larger "C" zone than a traditional ABA aninmal face thus archers new to the sport have a larger opportunity to score whilst the actual "A" zone on a IFAA Hunter target is somewhat smaller than and ABA Animal target making it just that little bit more challenging for the more experienced archer. Scoring was kept simple with the 20 - 15 - 10 rule applying for an "A", "B" and "C" respectively.

Some good scores were handed in with the following member beating the club records set in their division.
Sebastian Donovan, Shane Thompson, Meg Jaeger, Katie Patrick, Emily Jaeger, Karen Hudson, and Jodi Dolbel.

Ben Ireland shot consitently to take out the Mens Open.
The club would like wish Ben and Cassie all the best for their wedding next weekend.

Steve Jaeger On Top Of The World

Gunnedah Archer, Steve Jaeger has just returned from Hungary with a coveted World Title after competing in the International Field Archery Association 3D World Championships. The 3D World Championships which attracted a field of over five hundred archers were held in Sopron, Hungary. Jaeger, competing in the Freestyle Limited division won his first ever World Championship after four days of competition with Hungarian, Armand Herczog in second place and Ian Dean from England in third. Jaeger set up his win with a strong showing on the very first and second days. The Hungarian competitor and Jaeger returned the same score for the third round but with a good lead Jaeger was still in control. The fourth round turned into a tense affair with Jaeger not shooting as well as he struggled with equipment problems but showing plenty of mental toughness Jaeger covered his opponent all the way to claim the gold medal in a magnificent performance.
The quality of this win can not be underestimated with Jaeger on a limited travel schedule arriving in Venice, then travelling to Budapest with only two full days to overcome jet lag and acclimatise to the conditions before the tournament. The 300km trip from Budapest to Sopron was a memorable one with Jaeger travelling with his hosts in a Lamborghini sports car. The venue for the event was a Horse Sports complex with the range designers making excellent use of the surrounding Birch and Pine forest with a combination of steep uphill shots, targets placed in very dark areas of the forest and shots placed out in lush open meadows making shooting very difficult. To add to the challenge Jaeger had to quickly adapt to 3D targets he had never shot before and reacquaint himself with the IFAA rules of shoot which are different to those used in Australia. The language barrier was another challenge with Jaeger the only Australian at the event, fortunately all announcements for the tournament were delivered in three languages, Hungarian, German and English making things a little easier. The event was blessed with great weather over the four days with maximum temperatures of 24 degrees, the only blemish was an early morning fog on the last day of competition.
Hosts, Csaba Szamosvolgyi and Ference Csaszar showed plenty of local hospitality to Jaeger renewing a friendship which was established when they competed at the 2004 Australian Championships in Charleville. ‘Aussie Steve’ made a lasting impression in Sopron both on the ranges and the after shoot social activities. Winning the World 3D title has capped off an extraordinary year for Jaeger in which he won three Australian titles. Jaeger was also selected in the seven man Australian team to contest the World Field Archery Championships held in Hervey Bay in June in which he finished fourth in the individual event and won a silver medal in the teams event.

Getting to and from the event in Steve's hosts meager transport was no problem.

The practice butts, competitors had their choice of 3D target, butts or 3D pop up's.

Regardless of the colour of his flights Steve cleaned up the Freestyle Limited division by a considerable margin to take the honors and a world title.
